I Love You My Child

before I first felt you stir
growing inside of me
my mornings were a dizzy blur
and an evening occasionally
you gave me quite a rough time
for a while
when I think of it now
sometimes I smile
sometimes I don't

the first time you moved
and let me know it
it was a wonderful startling shock for a bit
I just sat down a while from the wonder of it
my little one growing inside of me
and I just knew how I couldn't wait to see and hold you
to my breast reflecting on how much I was blessed

you know, my little one,
carrying you around
wasn't the easiest thing I have ever
found to do
it's a bit uncomfortable carrying
a soccer player
every day, who played every day
but I told myself that God answered my
prayers for a healthy child
and he did

your birth hurt and I thought
I would never feel that kind of pain again
I was wrong

I love you my child

dad tried to help and said breathe
and push
but it was really just you and me kid
doctor said you were coming
and you did
and there you were

I love you my child

words cannot describe how I
felt when you let out that first cry
to let me know who was going to try
to be in charge
and you were

do you know what a loving pain
in the butt a baby can be
seems as though your first word wasn't mama
but me, me, me

I learned how to sleep deeply but
wake if a feather fell
of course your bed was next to me
so I could tell if you were alright

I can't ever remember being so tired
and worn
have been since you were born
and until this day
please sleep through one night

dad loved you in a dad way
and that is good
but he and I fortunately
understood
moms love a different way

you know, I told you I hurt when
you were born, but would feel
greater pain later on
I did
when you were sick at night
with colic
I know you hurt, but
my heart
felt as though it would
come apart
and it did a little bit

I love you my child

your bumps and bruises put a little
tear here and there
I wish kids were bullet proof
cause mom's hearts aren't

you grew to the teens
eventually
and then I remembered
what my mom told me
they step on your feet when they are young
and on your heart when they grow up
and that is what hurts the most
cause mom's hearts aren't
bulletproof

A moving and reflective tribute to motherhood. Fathers of course have their own reflections - I have a 30 year old daughter who is the apple of my eye - but it is rewarding to be invited into the mother's inner struggles. I relate very much to the latter footsteps on the heart but mercifully that path has disappeared.
Touching.

You described the pains of mother par excellence. In Malta we have an old proverb that Babies and baby animals are a great pain always. That's true. But we can't help loving them. Which is why I cannot understand how occasionally you hear of a mother who hated her children. Incredible but true. Victor

Oh my God, Rusty, I'm sitting here with tears running down my cheeks. How you've caught every nuance of pregnancy, how you've caught each wonderful step along the way, and then "I love you, my child" ... is true beauty in it's most noble form. Exceptional poem from an exceptional man. This is truly superb.
Love and so very much respect,
CJ

An absolutely marvelous way to express parenthood: all the joys, pride, caring, nurturing, frights...then the wee-ones are out on their own, and the never-ending cycle begins once again! It takes a dear heart to write from the mother's soul. Kudos, Dad!

Rusty, your compostion says it all... and from the mother's viewpoint ! ! ! Being able to do this is a rare gift. I try, but the results have never been this lvoingly gripping and truthfully said. Bless Mom and Dad, too... and that grownup brat who loves you.
- Bill
