Hello--- I've stumbled across your pages here at Author's Den, and I feel compelled to write. First, I can see that you have a passion for writing--- as well as a passion for passion itself. I have some advice for you: first, if you truly love to write, and if you truly *need* to write... then you need to discover whether you intend for it to be a hobby or a profession. If you want to be a professional writer, then you should take your writing seriously enough to study your craft until your work is the best it can be. Yes, pretty words and romance will flatter female readers and bring you praise. But are you doing your best? Have you studied poetry enough to know whether you are, in fact, writing poetry--- or prose that appears to be a poem at first glance? Have you paid attention to vocabulary, so that you make sense in your work, rather than being redundant? When you're finished with a poem, are you truly finished or do you need to give it some time to mature? Maybe you need to let a poem sit for a while, then come back with a fresh eye so you can edit more objectively. Often you can cross out entire words (even entire stanzas, as upsetting as that might sound!) without harming a poem, and end up *saving* the poem. Gilles, I know these words sound harsh, but I can see that you have spent a lot of time on all of this, and you care deeply about what you're doing. I guess what I want to tell you is that your dedication shows--- and I'd like to see your writing mature and 'flesh out' a bit. I'll be returning to this page to read periodically, because I think it will be interesting to see how your work develops. (And just so you know--- I'm only a fellow writer myself, so I certainly don't profess to know everything! I can tell you this much, though. I've never taken the time to write out a response like this before, so you must have some sort of a spark that interests readers. Keep on writing, and don't be afraid to get tough with yourself!)
