Poem Artwork

It was a beautiful spring morning, the sun
glinting on the plane as it landed, blinding her

Sara stood there with his mom.dad, and sister waiting for him to deplane

She recalled when Brad had left for Viet Nam having a flash thought, she was seeing him for the last time

That vision had haunted her all the while
he was gone, and now could hardly believe
that he'd be getting off the plane

Being awash in so many mixed emotions
her knees buckled when she finally saw him

After hugging his family, when he took her in
his arms, she couldn't stem the torrent of tears

On the way home he kept his arm around her, as he dialogued with his father mostly just catching up on things at home

She had asked them to drop her home first so he could spend some time with his faimly, before he came over to  visit her family

When she got out of the car, she watched
them leave, then ran into the house so excited and told her parents and brother he was fine

Sara and Brad had been high school sweethearts would now hopefully continue the relationship the war had interrupted

Later that evening after he had visited with her family, and they were all in bed,Sara and Brad made love on the sofa, learning their love for each other hadn't changed

When he left about 2:00 am,she had a haunting feeling not wanting to let him go

Two hours later her parents woke her to tell her the terrible news that Brad had been killed in a car accident

On the way home a drunk driver ran a light crashed into him head on, going 90 mph

The drunk driver ,a young man, survived

One can only imagine what poor Sara, and the families went through over this kind of loss to survive a war,to be killed in a car accident the very day you come home

It would take  years to sort it all out...

To lose a love...and have that love reborn and renewed...then to lose it all again... what pain must feel the heart.
A poem that won't be forgotten soon...

Fate wrests certain joy and turns into tragedy. Sad but so true in many lives. An acquaitence struggled and battled to finally be cured of cancer. This past weekend, after having been given a clean bill of health, he and his girlfriend were killed in a motorcycle accident. JMW

A startling and sad reality of two separate types of war, one fought for freedoms, the other fought against drunk driving...both deadly. Tragic awakening...impressive write, Eileen!!

Drunk drivers, impell such sorrow to decent human beings. This one served his country so proud...His love and parents left behind to ask why...Eileen, the story will touch the hearts of many today... Powerful insight...the time God give us to rejoice and cherish...if only short...

Haunting story. It is so real, it must be true. So many of the Vietnam veterans were self-destructive. Whether it was driving too fast, fighting, drinking too much, driving when they hadn't enough sleep, or drugs. There was a time bomb ticking in them. Some escaped it. Some didn't.

Stories like these remind us that there must be some sort of grand plan. It makes me wonder if he had prayed that he would survive long enough to see her one more time, to go home and find that her love for him was still warm. I had a friend who was a fighter pilot, shot down in Nam, taken prisoner, but able to escape when his captors were more interested in his aircraft than him. He survived the jungle for a couple of weeks before finding "friendlys" and thirty years of combat as a Navy Aviator, only to come home and be killed in much the same way as the man in your prose. It is befuddling to say the least and impossible for me to wrap my thoughts around. Nice work, Eileen.
Take care,
Sherry

Oh this is so sad and painful. Alcohol is more powerful than war. We lose more on the highways than even in a war. Lovely but painful poem. Love, Bonnie
