(Am I the cause of all this?)

I found you when it was too late.
There wasn't much left when I arrived.

The door was burning hot,
I withdrew my hands, immediately.

But I'm stubborn
and my past lives forbid me
any future mistakes.

That's why I took a wet cloth,
though my eyes remained dry,
and I broke in;
into your house,
into your consumed life.

I knew I couldn't love you,
I only wanted to save what was left.

A sweet smell, yellow smoke
and now the certainty
that nothing could be done.

But I'm unstoppable
and between greasy grey walls,
stepping on ashes,
I came to look for you.

Not much was left,
the only thing still alive
was the lonely flame
singing its heathen prayer,
surrounded by dancing shadows
on the dirty wallpaper.

Who knows what really happened,
you were charred beyond recognition.
Were you sitting alone in your couch,
crying, craving, dying
for me to come back home?

How many hours did you spend
until despair suddenly turned into flames
that burst your heart
and consumed you entirely?

I found your wrist watch
still intact at your feet,
it reminded me I was late, once again.

Then, I overheard expert voices
that said
"spontaneous human combustion".

They knew nothing.
You were always so calculating,
seldom human,
but they were right about combustion.

You caught fire, and I left you there,
to burn.

Axilea - Powerful poem. Powerful images.I like the ambiguity of both characters. No villain, no victim. Simply the twists of life. Especially liked the last stanza and the last two lines, though many other lines deserve to be quoted, too. - David

This fills my heart with sadness. I can't help but equate this to my ex-husband - who died alone and wasn't discovered for a couple of weeks.

God bless you. Kathy

Sometimes... sometimes it is better to let things burn without trying to rescue them because there are those times that in trying to help we would end up being consumed as well. But...on the other hand... sometimes fire and destruction leads to a richer field of flowers than we would have had without that flame... Fantastic. Your imagery is wonderful, and tragic. I'm not a poetry person; but I enjoy the rawness of this piece. Bravo

Semisas. This poem is so painful to read. You know that it will consume him--this flame, and yet your humanity cannot help but to reach out--to try to save him. There is no phoenix rising with those consumed from within. Shame that the flames never die completely--they dance behind the eyes of those who were singed by him--but the flame does not warm, no. The flame cools their minds, their hearts--makes them careful--wary--suspicious--such a shame. But then again, combustion can ignite another being--spurring them on to better things. --Charlie

An outstanding surreal-impressionistic-symbolistical composition... A true sample of what poemization can do for emotions and visions; and what poetic excellence can show.

Another awesome canvas from you, Axilea. This is so real as to be surreal and the sustained image of fire that runs throughout belies the stark chill in the frozen emotions. The clarity of your voice is exemplary, allowing the layered detail to speak for itself. This whole section speaks as much as a full-lenth biography:

Excellent, thank you. Kate xx
