Her Old Dress

      The full skirt
floats in the air
to slow down
time, like an ambulant thought.

Worn,
made more valuable still
moon-silver silk
that rises, stands
as if some force
       from an old, unfailing source,
had come out of the closet...
to meet her.

Standing, only waiting
for her to be the heartbeat
         beneath the skin,
the structure that embraces,
         the reality of her soul.
Its charm goes beyond the print,
lives in its fabric,
lets the woman shine
as it reflects her authenticity
to the world.

And there, in her living space, up above the city,
she sees the light slowly warm the wooden floor,
its sweet caramel-orange hues
surround her bare feet.

   Soon, she'll be offshore:
nothing - no one can drown that smile
when she lets the dress
kiss her shoulders, caress her breasts,
gently surround her waist
and dance on her hips...
she tiptoes
lifts her arms up
like confident candles.

She redeemed her ship,
set her sails
- for her deepest love - intact
is priceless and... not for sale!

As she approaches the freedom
                        of her open sea,
the waves are lifted, like a brocade curtain,
and beyond, the sea is quietly moving
      natural, organic,
like the mineral color of the silk
that comforts and cools
her animal warmth
and she is the captain of her vessel
                      in her best, old dress.

My, My, My! Such splendid poetry -- rich with wonderful metaphores -- and phrases that ebb and flow and caress the reader! I love it! Bravo, Axilea!

There's a lot of symbolism in this poem. One's imagination can take flight to create new stanza's. A terrific write. To me, I imagine her walking into the smooth flow of the sea with her old dress on. Is she perhaps wanting to commit suicide?

Exuding femininity, and flooding with warmth and resolution... one of your best-- and that's saying something.

I imagine she cut it from the fabric of life-- blue and floral, and softly clinging-- a cloth full of memories of a grandma's love--wise and sheltering, and generous--giving. And there's something of the sea there too-- shimmering, changing, eddying, rippling, and dancing--she, in its ribbon, hands above head, making a light-becon--beckoning sweetness to find safety and love on her bow-- in her harbor. A dream-ship, made of brocade hull, and shear, silken sails... a lovely picture/sentiment/voice. --Charlie

Fabulous symbiosis of the inanimate and living, Axilea. As others have said, this is very strong writing indeed as you flesh out the gravitas and life in the fabric that is its own source, yet wonderfully completed and complemented by the living spirit of its owner. Truly, you have conjured this "hand-in-glove" feel. It's a definite truism that we can best function when we are clothed in our natural "feel-good" which has the capacity to channel all our energies. A wonderful capture which is concrete and grounded, yet ethereal and mysterious in equal measure. This write has an aura. Love it! :)) TY Kate xx

Axilea, you are a mistress of passion for such simple yet sensual evryday things. Some would see the old dress and think of it is clothing...you see it as a living entity with a life and memories of it's own. This is beautiful and not a doubt in my mind one of your very best and so worthy of being published.
