I consider myself
Something of a late bloomer.
I, who aspired to a life of music,
Who dreamt early of becoming
The next Cher, and later,
The next Leontyne Price.
I've long enjoyed the genius of Mozart,
The passion of Beethoven,
The comedy of Ray Stevens,
And the rock of The Eagles;
But only recently have I discovered
The wonder of Gershwin.
First it was Rhapsody in Blue,
Followed by An American in Paris,
Leaving me to wonder
Who else is out there
Ready to catch my spirit
And carry it aloft?
To fly up and down,
Hither and fro,
Like an autumn leaf on the wind?
Or make my heart pound
Like the sea upon a rocky coast?
Indeed,
What purity of the soul
Can anything else bring
Like the power of music?
You could do worse than to discover Gershwin, more George than Ira,
but both very special. Rhapsody in Blue is probably the best American composition, and An American in Paris is without question our best musical. Listen to a quiet rendering of Summertime from Porgy and Bess and you will discover it's really a prayer. Love your poetry!
