The trouble with declaring
Myself as Myself
Is that
I've opened Myself
To the censure of others
Without the shield
Of dishonest
Or hidden
Representation meant
To protect who I am
At heart.
I can no longer hide
The person
I truly am,
Or deny those places where
My heart stands
Open
To that which it
Beats.
Unfortunately
There are those who
Do not appreciate my presence,
Who have decided that
I am not worthy,
That what I have to offer
Is not enough,
And it hurts;
But who are they,
And who am I,
To deny
The total person
I am?
We have our self identities. Sometimes they are shaped by others for reasons that have nothing to do with who we really are. But there is strength in revealing who we really are. It takes courage, but in that courage we become stronger and can ward off all the negative that comes our way. We can say it loud and proud like Frank Sinatra sang, "I did it my way…"
Good questions at the end of the poem that need answers, perhaps in another poem. They are nothing, do not know the persona of you, have no right to make judgments, nor should your persona feel bad because of them. Time to take charge of yourself and yes, as the others have said below, be yourself.
No matter what you do, there are always going to be some people who will dislike you for reasons of their own, it has nothing to do with you. Don't sweat about it. Just be yourself!
