Once upon my childhood
When I was still a boy
I had three friends
With whom I ran
In freedom and with joy
There was John
And there was Mike
And then came Jim,
The oldest one
We were one for all
And all for one
Our bond forever strong.
We were spacemen
We were cowboys
We were soldiers
We were spies
We were fearless
We were loyal
We were tough
So strong our ties
It seemed to me
Things could not change
But one day
Out of the blue
Things did change
To my dismay
I was different
And without a clue
Suddenly I was not allowed
To carry my books home
From the bus
For they'd argue
They would bicker
Nearly fight
And even cuss
I'd get fed up
And divide my books
To preserve our bond and ties
I was puzzled
I was angry
I was impatient
I often sighed
For we had changed
Forever more
I did not understand
I was different
I was separate
I was no longer
One of them
For somewhere along the line
I became that thing despised
No longer strong
No longer brave
A stupid girl
Useless
In their eyes
Such a meaningful and soul-reaching poem. It "speaks" to me to the core because I was originally raised as a girl and I loved it. All of my life since childhood, I have always felt "at home" with girls/women. Life had other intentions. When my sister, the only girl of the seven children, came along and was old enough to help my mother, I was tossed out into the world of "men/guys." Such is life I suppose. I am grateful for everything that I have experienced and learned and I continue to be open to whatever. Your poem is very meaningful to me, Rebecca. Thank you for sharing it. Love and best wishes,
Up until puberty starts to change things, children are very accepting and get along well together unless they have influence from parents or older children that steer them in the wrong direction. But you're right according to your poem. Young boys become very horny teenagers who make all kinds of blunders as part of their attempting to grow up. It takes some boys whole lifetime and they still don't grow up.
I am not always a big fan of change especially unexpected or thrust upon us change but I do believe without changes this world would be a pretty boring place.
In this world, nothing stays the same. People change, we change, some of our friends change and we are no longer their best friends. We need to be strong for ourselves.
Change is a difficult thing to understand, especially the change within people that you have described in this poem. Yet, change is inevitable, we live in a changing world.
She never felt safe at home as a young girl, and didn't understand why when she finally escaped she wasn't safe in the big wide world either ...effectively jumping out of the frying pan into the fire!
