The night air stings my cheeks
Above the bright red scarf
An elderly member of my
Sunday School class
Had given to me
For our Christmas party
Just that night.
It is a true work
Of consummate craftsmanship,
A testament to nearly
Ninety years of
Skill and experience,
For once the knitting
Was done,
The bright red stitches
Were then embellished
With roses embroidered
With much more delicate yarn
Of dark green leaves
And delicate cream petals.
With hands grown stiff
With age,
She had nonetheless managed
To create a gift
That spoke to me
Of her love
As my honorary grandma
Since my birth
Nearly forty years ago,
And tears had filled my eyes
As I smiled and accepted
My treasure from
Her aged hands.
Then a mischevious twinkle
Had filled her faded blue eyes
As she slipped her arm
Through mine,
“My dear,” she whispered,
“Mavis Johnson's grandson
Is right over there.
Let's go visit.
He's a lawyer, you know...”
What a wonderful story poem! You captured the skill and love of the adopted grandmother so well, with that twist in the end when she became a matchmaker, too! Loved it!
I remember my aunt selling me one of her crocheted 3' x 6' 13 star flags for the 1976 Bicentennial. She asked $13 for it. I asked her how long it took her to make it and the others that she sold for $13. She replied, "Oh, about a week."
Fortunately, from her deceased World War I veteran husband's coin collections, and her second husband's railroad pension, she had a good retirement nest egg. And lived into her mid-90s, still crocheting. Unfortunately, she was raped in her apartment when she was 92, but her daughter told me she never mentioned it after that.
The flag disappeared when my ex left and took her things.
Oh Rebecca, you bring back such tender memories when you write like this. I come from a family of knitters, my mom and granny taught me how to knit, and so many beautiful things we knitted together while sharing laughter, and time. Thankyou for this evocative, piece, I adore it :)
