Hiroshima Dance (along with Europe After the Rain) appeared in Scintillae 2012. It concerns the link between Japanese butoh dancing and the impact on women and children of mechanised/industrial war-craft in the 20th century.

In her blog Jasmine writes: "Butoh is an amazing modern movement art form. It came, conceptually, out of the post atomic experience in Japan.  Where many forms of dance, such as ballet, focus on the form of the body, and the aesthetic qualities of the human body and the beauty of the shapes it can make, Butoh focuses instead on the grotesque.  It is a way of expressing the human potential for lack of self, for destruction and death."

Dr Ian Irvine (Hobson) is the author of two novels, a book of poetry and an acclaimed nonfiction book on chronic forms of alienation and ennui. He has co-edited over 20 writing anthologies and has taught as a creative arts educator and sometimes course coordinator since 1994. He is the founder and chief songwriter of the alt. rock band Interstitium, and was also the lead singer and co-songwriter of Australian alt rock band "Goya's Child (Original)" before his departure in 1994.

 Reviews of "Hiroshima Dance"

Fantastic write! I have been to Hiroshima and strolled along Peace Park. On the bomb, most people blame Emperor Hirohito for lying that he was a God. But Hiroshima gets even better late when it is dark. The folks like to sing in karaoke Bars and dance like it's an art. But what impressed me the most was who they were imitating. They were imitating their old adversary, America! So now I know there is a real God in heaven and the peace and hope HE brings. Thank you Ian!
