This came to me during the night as several rounds of severe thunderstorms pounded North Texas. Our power was out for nearly seven hours. (Thanks for your prayers!)

i remember
being terrified
of storms
when i was a
little girl
the lightning flashed
the thunder crashed
i would sit up
in the bed
& screeeeam at the
top of my lungs
mom would come upstairs
turn on the light
& all would be right
with the world

i remember
mom would get so mad
with me
having to come
upstairs each
time lightning flashed
time thunder crashed
i decided
to turn the
light on myself
like a big girl
i'd turn it on
fear disappeared
& all would be right
with the world

...it just never occured to me that the power could go off...

I can relate tho this. When I was child, I lived in San Antonio, TX and the storms are one of the things I remember. This is great.

Excellent write Karl!;-)
When the power goes out I light my candles
put my battery radio on,and dream until a
poem comes to mind then I start writing with
my good old pencil and yellow legal pad, which
always give me my best poems! ;-)

Power went out frequently here in West Virginia, too. That's when we lit the candles and played scrabble until it came back on. Sometimes I was actually sad when the lights returned.

karla,

Good write!

I must confess that I am one of those who is fascinated by lightning and Thunder. I will spare you tales of my standing in a meadow watching a thunderstorm. . .

Your poem helps me understand the other side of the matter.

Another powerful write, Karla.

I am really starting to believe that these storms, and your perception of them, although frightening to you, are also inspiring you to write some fantastic poems.

I always liked storms until I found out lightning could enter homes through open windows. Now that scared me!

What a vivid poem of fear and trepidation. Even as adults we get nervous when Mother Nature raises her head in an angry manner. I can see in my minds eye how scared you were. But turning the light on saved you, right? Ha, Ha. Hugs you friend always. xxoo Bill

Awww, I was about 5 and in a big storm said to dad, well we are safe here not like the people in the song, how can you tell me you're lonely.

In house thunder storms hit fridays for some reason, wife thought I was mad, but I sit in conservatory doors open and watch nature at its best, except when we had a hurrican, Andrew? I went down cost with ex, and watched sea, and trees uproot, bloody terrific, nature one can only stand in awe. well what we did at devils dyke, this is not 18:))) come to think of it nor was she. England age is 16, hmmmm, long and distant past...

(((Karla)))

Ahhh...what pleasant (and not so pleasant) memories you have stirred up with this amusing write! Remember how you and I would hold onto one another for dear life and scream for mom to turn on the lights, and as long as she did, then we'd go back to sleep? But then we got smart (WE thought...), and we started trying to sneak lightbulbs until mom found our "secret stash" and gave us the riot act! Ohhh, she would get maddddd....LOL Thanks for this delightful memory jog! Enjoyed so much~

(((HUGS))) and much love, your (fellow storm phobic) twin, Karen Lynn. :D
