I will not forget. Thank you to all of the veterans who served, past, present and future.

Poem Artwork

it's been a bad day :
a hero is at the bar ,
getting drunk once more -

reliving the past
of great and glorious wars
and current nightmares -

feeling no pain , he
staggers against the shoulders
of unyielding ghosts -

and the ghosts shove back ,
taking umbrage at having
to point the way home -

muttering curses
and striking without aiming ,
he falls with a crash -

into the gutter ;
he roars his frustration at
what life has become -

a forgotten one
flash-in-the-pan-now-he's gone
he still remembers -

and the ghosts pass by ,
shaking their heads and giving
him plenty of room.

Powerfully sad, Karla - and there are far too many forgotten heroes in this country, which is truly shameful. All of us, and our government, truly do need to make things better for our veterans - and you truly lead the way.

Spoken from the heart and delivering sobering punches. Not all who take on the job of being a warrior have the stomach for it; those are the truly brave. They took on a task that terrified them and completed it. The haunting memories stain their existence and leave their lives in shreds. Excellent and stunning poem, Karla. Thank you.
Take care,
Sherry

These are such excellent words describing a sad and serious subject. I ask again; When are our the Members of Congress, who control the purse strings for better veterans care, going to do for needy beterans what they do for themselves? I've waited for decades for the answer. Parades, flowers and speeches are fine, butgood men are being washed into the gutter of our society. - Bill

This is staggering, Karla... a unique perspective on the interaction between those who have served us, past and present. I don't mean to be facetious to say it is truly haunting. The pathos of the demeaned soldier is something that we might be readily familiar with - but the mawkishness of his ghoulish fellows is an unusual concept to me. Thank you for keeping these issues uppermost in our minds. Bless you, Kate xx ... and for your empathy on my "Father" write last night - mwahs xx
