When I saw the fireworks in our skies, I thought about you, over there - What kind of holiday were you having And were you safe, over there - As I thought about our nation's freedom, I thought about you, over there - Mommy wishes that you would come home soon, But you still have work to do, over there - Two military men are at my door - With news that my son was killed over there.
This is powerful, Karla... and a stark reminder that, for some, out of sight is thankfully NOT out of mind. More than that, it highlights the pain of those who carry daily the candle of remembrance in their hearts for all those who dutifully carry out tasks on our behalf in places that are, to say the least, dark and difficult and at great personal cost and risk.
