Our wonderful consumer-public people are blind to the street people. I saw it in southern California. We had 100,000+ homeless people (men, women, kids) in Los Angeles County alone. But no one ever saw them.
During my upper-division studies, I did a research paper on the homeless. My thesis was that people became homeless because they had lost all elements of their economic support system. After completing 350 sit-down discussion/interviews with homeless persons, I found that I had to mitigate my original these - because my thesis did not fit the homeless Vietnam Vets. There were eight vets, all of them men, and most of them Marines. All eight of them were homeless, living on the streets, and still very angry at Americans. All eight of them had dropped out, no more working to pay taxes to an America which did not support them during the Vietnam War. Self-serving Americans turned against those soldiers. Americans were blind to them then, and Americans remain blind to them now that these vets are living homeless on our mean streets.
Each of these discussion/interviews took place out on the city sidewalks, maybe sitting up against a convenience store wall, maybe standing on a busy street corner. And I remember one impression. Countless American citizens were walking by. We were quite visible. But the American people walked wide around us, always seeming to be looking in some other direction. We may as well have been invisible.

important words--this should not go on--those who defend our country and what it stands for should be cared for better than this-their basic medical needs arent met much less day to day needs for many who are disabled
Sadly, this type of behavior goes all the way back to the beginning. Unfortunately this is nothing new, our government has promised veterans many things and then pulled back at the last minute only to leave them all twisting in the wind. Pick your war and the veterans were trampled on sooner or later by the government.
Living conditions are deplorable for military personnel and their families. Base housing is more like shanty towns, run down and bleak. Commissaries carry a variety of products and are supposed to be about 1/2 the price as the outside world. Yet, what they are given to sell are more or less below acceptable standards. We as a nation have never done right by all who volunteered or were drafted. Great write....
Amen sister, write on dear friend...I don't understand how our veterans can be forgotten, or not taken care of, after all...where would we be without them? Great write!

I hear ya Karla! If there is one thing I do not think any American would argue about is more benefits for the military. And it is not just THIS administration. Clinton did not like the military and thought they were not needed. Rubber bullets? Take away thier pay and means of protection. A sad thing.
Heart breaking and unfortunately true. This administration has a terrible record when it comes to their treatment of veterans.
I have been working on a book on PTSD and have had many conversations with other Vietnam vets. These Iraqi and Afghanistan vets will suffer the consequences of these battles for decades.

Where is the compassion in the Govt. Is there not an equavlent to the British legion, or the RAF homes, etc?

Why ARE we taking care of those who don't deserve to be here or taking care of the world when we can't even take care of our OWN? WHY are we letting our vets go hungry or living on subservient incomes, why are they being denied the help that they (you among them) so RIGHTFULLY deserve?? WHY?? This needs to be SHOUTED from the rooftops; this needs to be shared with our government. Let them SEE what you and other veterans are experiencing firsthand. Let THEM live on what YOU get every month; let THEM get denied the benefits or care. Let them see what it's like. Chances are, they won't make it. Shame, such a rotten shame!
When are WE, as AMERICANS, going to rise up and shout: "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?"

very good and to the point. I remember how we treated the Vietnam vets and I hope we take better care of the men and women who represent us now, regardless of how we feel about this war.
The anger that is welling inside me began at your first word and continued through the last and into my review because of the sadness of what you wrote. These people who fought so galantly for ALL of us deserve better. It's not like they woke up one morning with the thought of being maimed and having to rely on us for basic human care.
Bitter gall! I wonder where the bill is that claims to have taken care of that problem and given vets more help? It gets headlined news, then is forgotten,and we never kn ow what came of it.It should be investigated! Thank you for your service Karla!
We have sadly become a vast nation of hardly anyone gives a damn about anything it seems these days, except themselves. And after having spent almost 30 years trying to help our vets, I know we haven't given a damn about them since way back in Viet Nam.
