Sometimes I wonder
How you seem to always find a way
From the maddening confusion
Of this world’s troubled state

And I wonder
How do you keep your eyes focused?
When everything appears like a blur

And shadows
Dance in the dust
Trying to imprison you into their dreams

Sometimes I speculate how you’re still alive
Perhaps the gods are watching over you

Perhaps you are trying
To be as strong as possible

Perhaps a creative spark is feeding you
Protecting your sense of alarm

Or are you just lucky?

So what is it that keeps you functioning?
What is it that keeps you on the ball?

Perhaps you’re just a joker
Playing in a deck of cards

Filling in
On any hand

No matter how large
Or how small

My boss complimented me once and told me "You have such grace under pressure. We're all running around like chickens with our heads cut off due to the deadline, and you're always so calm every week and every week you make it." I told him, "That's because you guys are smart. I'm too stupid to know we're having a crisis."
Yes, God protects fools and babies, Jude. I may be both of those. Who are you? ;-) Lovely poem, dude.

Is this about you? The poem has a wonderful flow with lots of mystery woven in. I can never miss one of your poems. I saved them all for when I returned from the beach.

There are some people who seem to lead a charmed life, focused and strong in conviction and manner.
"Perhaps a creative spark is feeding you
Protecting your sense of alarm
Or are you just lucky?"

Creative spark? Lucky? Ah, if we only knew their formula!

Always seek the Light; preferably with fleet-footed nimbleness, but when necessary, on your hands and knees...
Third stanza resonates so powerfully. Beautifully developed poem, Sir Ace. Love the joker metaphor; very clever. You are an amazingly gifted Poet.

Being a joker and pawn most of my life I decided to move out of the castle and stick to being a peasant. Nice pen

I agree with the others especially Andrea when she said she believed she knows the guy. Me thinks it is a local politician.

I often feel like the joker but the joker can be overused as any good card player knows all too well. Robert I believe each of us is born with a distinct set of genes that are molded and educated at first by others and then by ourselves to make us the Kings, Queens, Knaves and Jokers in the deck of life and you have captured the joker's position brilliantly.

:))))) I'll buy Sherry's "Happy Idiot" theory! Having grown up in a house of madness and alcoholism, I and my three (much) older brothers are all the same: so that's one for every suit! Being a wild card that raises a smile and a surprise is one thing; being thought of as the bummer that ruins the game for everyone else is quite another... I am very aware that humour can tread a very fine line. But there you go... can't help the way you're made and fashioned, I guess. "Surviving" creates enormous drive, too, I think: energy and adrenalin rush. I think many will be relating to your Joker today: "Send in the clowns!" A fascinating and intriguing character sketch, thank you. Kate xx

This is why I never read you before the morning coffee...maybe this person is a survivor and that is all they know. I like the way the poem ends in a question without ending in a question, like you are waiting for an answer...clever. What a conundrum...

Sometimes being oblivious to all that is going on around them, keeps them from falling into the trap. They just muddle through life without the sense to know fear or concern. Perhaps there is something to be said for being "the happy idiot."
Take care,
Sherry
