It’s strange how people hurt
What they love the most

Even those
With too many issues
Find a way to satisfy themselves

Even as they leave you hanging
Like a dismembered
Fragment of dissociable psychobabble

So isn’t that why they love you?

To brighten their image
And strengthen their reality
Even when they cannot accept
What you emotionally have to offer

Isn’t that why you have lost the trust
You once needed to function?

Like a river without any current
You can’t just wallow
On a dinghy to nowhere
So you look for a new ocean

Isn’t it that why people who need you the most
Will not accept the truisms
You utter out of necessity

Once again cluttered
With trying to make sense of it all

Isn’t it strange how people love to hurt
What they find irresistible?

Love comes with no questions or pain. The illusions of love will leave many questions in your mind. I have doubted the word love from many people that have been in my life. Meeting my soul family I experienced unconditional love. Keep the faith; love is real :-) (not sure why I felt the need to share this thought at this time.)

True wisdom!. How true that love hurts , because we seek to possess and change another to suit our own whimsical needs and fantastic ideals! Excellent!

So you look for a new ocean......only how disappointing to discover that the next ocean is no more magical and beautiful than the last...than the first. But there is always that silver gleam of peace that follows the wake of every storm. And maybe life has taught me by now that love cannot be bottled in an aphorism and thrown out onto the tossing waves of life. If so, I should love to stumble upon that little treasure.

This is so true. Some do get an enjoyment out of hurting their supposed loved ones. A paradox of human nature..

This strangely reminds me of the image of a kitten being squeezed to death by the over-zealous affection of the unwitting toddler who is clutching it! But it also makes me think of the ugliness of one person seeking to control another. Such "love" can indeed be rooted either in admiration or jealousy - both of which say more about how the "lover" feels about themselves than the object of their affection. I wrote "First Cut" on the train coming back from London yesterday and there seems to be an echo in there somewhere... yup, for sure, love hurts... TY Kate xx

Robert, One has to be at peace within before they can walk in peace with another.
There are those that will never know, and there are those that don't want to know.

Interesting write, Jude. It's been my experience that people try to destroy what they find irresistible but what they cannot control and conform to the ideal they've created of that person in their own minds or what they cannot force to worship them in kind. It's the classic "I want you desperately. I must consume you, but I can't. If I can't have you and you won't love me the way I think you should love me, well then I'll destroy you." It's the cliche--"If I can't have you no one can!" It's not that complex, and it's not true love either. It's ego, lust, and obsession fronting as love. People fall for it all the time until they grow up.

I think you showed this well by contrast of your opening and closing couplets. Once reality sets in that the desperate party cannot control the other person, the one who feels rejected often falls into loving to hurt rather than simply loving. Which should have us ask, was it ever true love? To find something irresistible is obsession. If you truly love, you know when to let go and that would be before you crush the object of your affections. If you love someone, you'll do what's best for that person and that may not be you in your present state. Damn! I hate being longer than the poem. ~~Nordette

very true words here, Jude...I can't say I've ever been the lasher, but I've been lashed out against. Love is hard, compromise is harder, and there is so much room for hurt in between. Great write :)

It is strange and it is understandable. Acceptance, where love is concerned is a major issue. Most of us believe in who we are and in our own pathway. When someone we love, feels that his or her pathway is the better one and that we should walk it together, in some way, it becomes invalidating and we lash out. I think this is why we search and search for someone who is on our same pathway or one that parallels us closely. There is a huge difference between compromise and complete alteration. Relationships are tough and love often serves to complicate the issue. What you say is so true, and I must admit that I have been on both sides of this issue and often there is no way to find a common ground. Excellent writing, Robert. Solid observations.
Take care,
Sherry
