Spent a night over at the mansion

Such a huge place

Reminds me of a curio concert hall
Crammed with citizens of the “new republic”

With artists and poets
With actors and musicians
With dreams of a inspired world

I sit on a couch and look out the window
To an ocean
Reflecting stars

I hear distant waves
Cushion the isolation of this ghostly place

Where moonbeams wander past curtains
Casting strange shadows upon the wall
Dancing around a fireplace
Smoldering with embers of tired thoughts
Ablaze with a delicate draft of heat upon my flesh

From up the winding staircase
I can just about hear you singing
Humming words I cannot understand

Significant only to the vapor of your memory
Spoken to faces no longer there

But it does not matter
For there is a tone of happiness
Still lingering in your tone

Maybe I am wrong and the faces can hear you

And I, just a visitor
Astonished by the energy
Residing in this exposé

Visualize life through your eyes

And now I am again reminded
How life still continues
Even in the moment
When everything seems to die

These verses touched my soul particularly but the whole poetic offering "spoke" to me. Thank you. Love and peace to you, Jude. Regis

loved these and also the lines Peter picked below. wherever the heck you were, the actress living in yesteryear's house or some other mansion, what a gift to see ocean reflecting stars, not to mention the opportunity to witness the "life" that lingers around the memory of a (missing?) inhabitant.

Ah, yes... the life-death continuum... the shedding of skins and the moving onwards and upwards to higher ground; metamorphosis, shape-shifting and change: it's all here, isn't it?! And what about the inhabiting of the eternal reality, the plane where two interlocked souls are always together - perhaps THAT is why she sings and hums?! She is, in fact, seeing and hearing the presently "absent faces". Life is a continuous paradox: plateaux, tablelands, stony paths and new ground. Love Sherry's points that there are also, indeed, those mountain camps along the way which demark irrefutable and irreversible change, enforcing a metaphysicial separation with that which has gone before. And, like Sue, I saw the actress with all her old play bills in this write, too. Looks like the dancing bear has made a getaway, though... perhaps he just metamorphosed into the Knight's suit of armour on the stairs instead... well, at least it's a few steps up! :)) Kate xx

You paint a beautiful picture Jude, I would agree with everyone else regarding the last stanza, but for me the whole poem is outstanding.

Masterfully crafted monument of a moment on the verge of another. Stark and yet unimitably poetic capture of a feeling that might be life as such.

As you evolve into your new birth, i'm happy to see you are still keepng that keen sense of "celestial audience" that surrounds you that speaks to your spirit and has always enhanced and taken your poetry to stellar heights. Awesome poem!

This one takes the reader with you right past the drawn moat and to the castle keep. I can almost hear the princess in her tower. Iknow it is a mansion but I envisioned a castle when I read it. Gret write.

Beautiful writing...and of course one I can relate to. I have a tendency to find darkness sometimes thought unwanted and then I have to scramble for the light. I wrote about it today...

This poem sounds as though you are going through great change, like you have reached a crossroads in your life and have decided to take one night to feel all that has passed, before continuing on your journey. Sometimes I think our lives are divided into segments and that we take on gradual changes as we travel through each segment until one day we realize that we have evolved into a new space where we are an embryo, once again, with only memories behind us, awakening to the new light of day. We are nothing if not a Being evolved from all that we have lived through, but at times the new door opens and we must either stay behind and become stagnant or walk through it and continue upon our intended journey. This is excellent writing, Robert!

Take care,

Sherry

Excellent; memories do linger; my godfather lives in the same home he and his wife lived in for fifty years, even though she passed 20 years ago; he turns on the record player and listens to the vinyls he and his wife danced to when they were young; pleasant memories last longer than unpleasant. Nice write.
