~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All the lights ahead
Are red
Not one is green
I wait then dart
Into traffic
Unseen
All the waves
Are still and frozen
Not one dares
Move over my head
Or thaw into my embrace
And the dreams
Are without substance
And the assumptions
Are shallow
And reactions are so bland
I find it hard to understand
Why I bothered traveling
Into this traffic jam
Where so many
Are going nowhere
And I find myself stuck
In this continuum of motion
It is interesting how people considered to be living life in the fast lane are usually forced to spend 25% of their day stuck in traffic. I figured out a way around this problem. I live in the city (if you can call Orlando a city) and commute to work in the country. It makes life whizz by way too fast. Enjoy the continuum. ~ Sara
Wonderful extended metaphor. I'm inventing a new word for your writing. It is "versesimiletude".
You must have driven in Houston. The faster we go the more we get stuck in life. Nice metaphor; life in the fast lane is an illusion.
Amazing how you still manage to bring the sea in somewhere - even when sizzling on Route 66! It IS an alien environment for those whose spirits can't be caged - a sober reminder that yes, in fact, we do inhabit physical time and place: more's the pity! We're just another rat in the pack after all! :)) Time to play "Spot The Poet"... the person staring absently into space then scrawling rabidly on the back of a crisp packet... or, in my case, with a lipstick on the windscreen; no wonder my driving is hazardous. Reminds me of Chris Rea's "Road To Hell" in fact, think I wrote it... in Raspberry Red on the dashboard... No worries, you'll be out of the rut quicker than you can say: "Moods Of Motion"! Kate xx
A scary yet deeply intriguing vision that pulls the reader inside a moment that challenges all of one's fight or flight instincts. Makes one wonder what Muller of the X-Files might do:-) A very enjoyable read.
Splendid poem!
It's easy to feel this way in today's culture
However, I know you're aware that only in the
traffic jams do we truly seek the way out....
You always choose the perfect words. What a gift you have!
Oh I have a idea...write poetry while you wait for the light to turn green....just keep your eye on it and ignore the horn!!
Hate being in a traffic jam myself....and if someone gives me a dirty look... I pretent to pick my nose and take aim at them with that very same finger!!
It works like magic!!
Jude,
For many reasons this feels like a cousin of the piece I just posted. Yours, showing more precognizance of your situation and mine, realizing much later, my struggle. I am always touched by your work and I look to you as a beacon to help in this journey though the shoals and reefs of my poetic world.
Thanks much.
Your observations are always dead-on!
It certainly does seem that there are a lot of tainted souls on this highway of life, doesn't it, Robert? Part of the growth process is to elevate our own thinking so that we don't see them as hopeless, simply in need of good leaders from whom they can learn by example. Cast your bread upon the water. We are Fishers of Men.
Take care,
Sherry
Good morning Robert!
This is a very realistic write. Sometimes we all have the feeling why are we rushing to somewhere, why the need to cut in in front of others just so to have about 1 minute or 2 superiority over others and at the same time foolish risking our lives for that 1 or 2 minutes of superiority. I don't understand this, but then again, we all foolishly do this voluntarily.
A good honest write.
