~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The city streets always bring be back to reality
Away from popularity contests and tales of poetic achievement
Away from the emotional tides
That ebb and flow like salt water taffy
Upon a desert of famished tastes and moods
These streets are abundant with mystery
They gesture to me down avenues
Where both madness and reason
Parade themselves upon secret places
And bring to me a strange oasis
Centering itself upon my wandering thoughts
And twisting me into the core of its action
Exciting me with its overburdening movement
To the point where I feel like a knotty ideal
Oh how these streets celebrate life’s illusions and realities
Forcing me to cerebrate and speculate and coagulate
The stream of my motion
Upon the synapses of this planet’s coition
And across a vast universe of manipulated conceptions
But that’s why I love these streets
They put things into perspective
They glow onto neon windows
And upon darkened corners
Where nighttime explorers
Gather and integrate daily know-how
And recite holy propaganda
From frayed newspapers
Scattered by winds
Resurrected through corridors of steel and stone
Such a disparity
Such a revelatory anomaly
To be bound to both innocence and culpability
Complying to a fragmented microcosm
Of a downward elevator that is always rising to the occasion
The streets are pulling me in
Like a magnet
That attracts and repels me
Into the macrocosm of inspired frivolity
Where nowhere can be somewhere
And where tattered streets become the heaven
I walk away from
With my eyes on top my head
*Noesis - a transcendent idea that only reason beyond experience can conceive ...
this gushed into my thoughts as i read it..noesis a new word for me..i like its meaning...you are brave to face a city everyday...cities tend to overwhelm me with condensed, supressed, energy
Ah the streets of any city, the sights, the sounds, the smells, the rats, the people and the life...glad though I live in the woods away from the world, for the most part...you get much "museful" thought from where you live, no matter where that is...Ed
Jude,
I have read this several times already and will be back for more.
There are so many ways this can be read...not going to go into all
that I walked away with from this, but I will tell you
that it is Really Great Work! I could quote every stanza in this as being my favorite...each has its own life, its own depth, its own symbolism, yet as a whole it "shows" and evokes a captivating story, full of visions, introspection and a reverence for what the writer perceiving!
This neon oasis brings me back to a knotty ideal--great wordplay my poet--couldn't wedge in another contradiction as I rode the up elevator down because mine doesn't go all the way to the top.
Right on!! Been, done, threw away the shirt and dug
it out again. You are so right. The Street is a microcosm
of. . .who we are, what we are. . . and yet it is One Big
Question. Or a long, looping series of them. Smooth a n d gritty. Full of potholes. Y e a h. Well &
You are brilliant...and I'm not! Darn it. This is amazing. I could hear the sounds and smell the smells. Feel the filth and the glamour. "Where nowhere can be somewhere." That like speaks volumns. I remember feeling that way during my wilder drinking days. It also expresses street people bound together and creating hopeless visions that become hopeful to them.
I've never liked the city, but this is so enlightening. For the first time, I understand how someone could see it as home.
The streets are a reality that most of us try to live above or at least live them from a distance or upon the fringe, but the reality of life oozes from the streets like warm molasses; so very rich in color, texture, aroma and flavor. The streets are us and the streets are all that we have been blessed not to be, but the streets are life, raw and palpable and as much a part of who we are as are the moon, the stars and the cosmos. Exceptional imagery and depth of field grace your amazing verses, Robert.
Take care,
Sherry
The streets of life are broard and narrow depending on where we want to walk. What we see is not always an illusion, nor painted with the same brush, nor leads to the same destination, but yet we continue to walk this pavement of life.
Stunning, Jude, at the height and epitome of The Forese unique "solar wind and windy light" hallmark... and not a beach in sight! :)) I really do think this must be a "flagship" poem of yours and needs to be in your book. You seem to have galvanised all of your ability, energy and passion into this one and the result is a total feast where every line and concept needs to be fully investigated both in the micro and macrocosm of intended meaning. It is so complete, and the width and breadth of it just shows how deep you've drawn this from. It loses energy nowhere - which is amazing in a write of this length. A total cornucopia. Shrewd and yet affectionate. Harmonious and ambivalent. I could go on all day - as you well know - but force myself to stop: your eyes may be wide open wondrous on top of your head - but you leave me with my eyes popping OUT of my head with this one! Professional jealousy just does not cover it... I'm decked! Knockedout Kate xx PS You sure are on a roll at the moment - whatever it is that's doing it for you, keep on doing it!
I can't find what noesis means(:
When I go to NY, on the 25th of this month, I'll make sure I don't walk across another movie set, they kinda got upset at me.
After getting lost trying to find Grand Central, but at lest I saw Macies, and many soldiers at underground stations. Those high, very high sky scrapers and the busy busy hussle bussle, looking the wrong way when crossing roads, is way over powering. Think I went through the Lincon tunnel. Amazed you can write such beauty, and see this with such poetic imagery.
I think I'll keep my accent to myself on July 4th, down Poughkeepsie way. But NY countryside and the mighty Hudson is breath taking, even saw a castle?
A great oxymoron poem. A day in the life of a native New Yorker..
Made me want to go for a walk with you, Jude. It's been a while since I've been across the GW Bridge or through the Holland Tunnel. We must touch life as writers, grab hold of both velvet and grit, sniff not only roses but also the puke of man. And yes, slipping from our towers, into the arms of our own and our fellows' frailties puts the value of blood coursing through our veins in perspective, stabs the fat ego and flattens us to a the right size for effective travel. I love the thrusting rhythm of this poem. At times you seemed a prize fighter too, jab jab at the shadows of jackass poets too big for their britches. ~~Nordette
I appreciate poems of place, Jude. Seems that the city has its own illusions, no matter how gritty and "in your face" it may be. Attraction and repulsion--this is the edge of life where many choose to live, "where nowhere can be somewhere". Where alchemy can create possibility. Great write!
