~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a boy he never allowed anyone to control him
He would fight against all who attempted to do so
At night he would lay awake
Considering all the possibilities
Circumstance would agree to
Allowing only the most effective thoughts
To enter his mind
Meditating on the most likely course of action
Prowling in the day ahead
And when he spoke he had something to say
No wasted words would pass his lips
No frail avowal or conclusion
Would penetrate the membrane of his presence
Nor distract him from what he envisioned
Or deter from how he lived each second
As though all of life had depended on it
Like a visitor from a far-off land
He wandered on isolated roads
He always felt home on
At times he imagined himself a farmer
Whose crops were growing in a field yet to be known
Searching for the elusive harvest
Inside the heart of every man
Where mysterious truths gathered
Longing to be sown
As a child he was always a dreamer
And when he became a man
He realized he still had yet to be born
Accepting control was just a pliable plan
One can only willfully plant upon
Yes, the wise farmer observes all the elements he is involved with and draws both wisdom and energy from them at the right time. But he has to become proactive and interactive as well, not being controlled or controlling, but getting in step with nature's changing pulse and rhythm in order for the harvest of his dreams to come to fruition. And you are right: the more you learn the less you know. Pliability is a wonderful image to apply to this kind of wilful give and take. The seed has to split its husk and share its contents before it gives yield. It can't stand resolutely on its own to produce. I'm starting to sound like a geek from the Dept of Agriculture...
At times he imagined himself a farmer
Whose crops were growing in a field yet to be known
And as he imagined himself so he became, perhaps? The mix of mature musing alongside reminiscences of the boy who grew up to discover "he still had yet to be born" is thoroughly intoxicating, Jude. And yet this has the feel of quiet observation and wisdom that has come, a gift harvested from the boy's focus and innate acceptance of some great purpose. You wear big shoes now and you share that gift, I think, each time you pen a write like this. Dawn
an interesting write...especially the intensity of this individual's presence and self-knowledge as a child. this one left me wondering, what else is there left for one to master, if one master's self control at a young age? life must open up like a lotus, for such people. a thoughtful write and read, robert.
Jude,
You put your quest out on a shingle and displayed it proudly with "Searching for the elusive harvest
Inside the heart of every man".
I too, seek that. WIth you cutting a path to such things, we that follow will collect the grain on that day.
Brilliant.
I especially liked this phrase.
"At times he imagined himself a farmer
Whose crops were growing in a field yet to be known"
It's like investing love and energy in a project, cultivating it, yet realizing its potential harvest might not be realized by you, nor appreciated by others.
Thought provoking poem, Robert!
An interesting story told in a poem, I like the independent philosophy of this one... To feel in control of life... yes, it's great to be "doing" rather than "done to"! An inspiring write on all levels.
Now I understand why I was always so captivated by your writing....if I didn't know better I'd say you just described my oldest Son, to a tee! From the first line all the way through!
You've again, done what most only dream of doing...You've reached way down deep and pulled out the perfect write.
Dear Jude,
For some of those who are dreamers, there is often the realization that they have yet to be born. What is being born without dreaming?
Very thought provoking an excellent write.
I know this feeling;
"And when he became a man
He realized he still had yet to be born "
i could relate to most of what you have said in this write. I would drive you nuts; I tend to be chatty :-)
Continue to dream as you create your fields :-)
I like to think of my life as an accumulation. Being born is easy, it is knowing what to do with that gift that is hard to decipher. Great, reflective poem Robert. Be well. ~ Sara
Life is all ying and yang. In order to experience life to its fullest, we must taste both sides of it. Without sadness we would never know how wonderful it is to feel happiness. Without control, we would never have a true appreciation for freedom. Emotionally stirring write, perfectly penned.
Take care,
In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu
In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
