A most powerful write from an observant mind. Although there is a lot of truth in what you write, sometimes there are many factors unknown to others and misconceptions surrounding issues. Many still do care, but so often we more readily tend to notice those who don't care... this I believe a normal human trait (this is my observation) Very thought provoking Jude.

Sad truthful statement.
The body is a miricle! 7 years it completely rebuilds itself. Imagine the beauty of how the power of thought can change it within an instance!
I think many do care..........they have just become to numb to express it anymore.
its the "don't even care" part that disturbs me most, Sir Ace. Superb capture here; expertely expressed, as always.

Excellent and so so sad of today's world. It's a constant struggle and so true we just try to get through each day. So sad as life is supposed to be Lived not just survived.

Your piece on the Concern of the Masses signal the end of common sense as we know it. It appears to me that the masses have decided to take the opium of indecision. They are unable to stand up and demand change.

so the truth is I was feeling a pretty heavy dose of depression and pessimism and I sign on to read you and other poet-dreamers and, for some reason, everywhere I click I find the sad state of soulless society... but, when I allow myself to see it from a different angle, I am infused with great hope that unlike the most people who don't even care there are a few among this ragtag band of poets who are all heart and soul and who hold with care the conviction that they can, in some small way perhaps, make a very real difference. thanks for letting me ramble. You are right Jude. Before moving to anywhere one must have all his/her senses in good balance, knowing who he is and where he is going to. emotions just make you explode in the wilderness of space like a meteor.
The gross apathy and the lack of desire to accept responsibility for our own future and happiness is a major concern for me, too, Robert. Like a herd of cows following the bell of the leader, we stumble blindly through life with no awareness of the fact that the slaughter house is at the end of our path. I hear a lot of people speaking of problems, but few offering viable solutions. If we neglect to take control of our own destiny, we will never realize our dreams...and to think that so many are alright with that fact! Sigh...it is very sad indeed. Excellent, thought-provoking poem.

I really shouldn't be reviewing this after an exhausting weekend... it leaves me sad: the last line, mostly, but it's the first that sets the thing off for me - yes, "the worst minds" perhaps we might expect to go down the wide and easy paths you suggest are detrimental to spiritual and emotional development; but, for me, the greatest travesty that it is also "the best minds" that are lost now down these routes, too. What a souless world our first world has become - and I think here in UK it is probably "worse" than US in this respect; perhaps the fact that both Andy and I are sandcastle-bashers says something about the cynicism of the current Brit psyche (... no, probably not; we're just big (boy!) kids!) But I think that your most on-point lines are "Most people resist any challenge Just wanting to survive in a struggling world"... fundamentally, I think the sense of disempowerment and the perceived lack of room for manoevre is perhaps the root cause of the stultifying "lethargy", rather than the fact that they plain "don't care". To "care" takes time, energy and often a change of direction, and most people feel they have none of any of these commodities to spare in the hard-pressedness of their lives. So it is painful in the extreme to try and find the resources to even try. Blanking out receptivity to change is therefore a placebo. This takes me back to lines 5 and 6 from Slowly Spreading Across The Page which sparked a similar reaction - in order for us to feel "we're OK" we need to keep the dreamers in their place and to cut everyone and everything down to our own minimal size and expectation in order not to feel the pain of "lack of achievement and the need to do more". Yes Jude the changing attitudes towards the arts, the humanities and civil rights in the world seems to be like the rest of the past 20 years...downsizing. Though a few still struggle valiently to make the changes and fight on too many tire of the battle and too few pick up where the sixties left off. Anyway sorry for rambling my friend but your work came home to roost in my heart when I read it.

I agree with this superb lament on the dire state of our society.
However it is for just these very people:

That you have the wisdom to bring about changes. You may not ever know, but keep sharing your enlightenment and you will effect change on a culture that is in need of the very attributes you are so blessedly endowed with.
We are an evolution of our choices, Sartre believed, and I am in full agreement. Jude, you have given a poetic form to a disease that gnaws at folks from the bottom - up . . . . however, Mr. Broome is correct, I think it will get worse.
This is a solid piece that works on several different levels. Remember, the opposite of Love isn't Hate . . . it's apathy.
Another masterpiece from the soothsayer; a sad commentary; I challenge each one of us to strive to make a difference; I never bought into the myth of changing a village.
Is it really THAT bad? You spell it out so well, leaving me to belive, still, what a fine clergyman once said to me about the South's racial problems back in the Fifties and Sixties; "It's going to get a lot worse, before it gets any better." So, perhaps we're into another of this planet's realignments, and those who come after will pay the horrible price of bringing back degrees of caring for one another. But, then again, when have we been without the bastards who steal, rape, pillage, hunt the golden parachute, and other dastardly deeds?
I sincerely believe that we've forgotten how to PUNISH persons for crimes committed against other persons. Until this is reversed, we will have the world you so ably describe. Good piece of writing - Bill
