~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In my dream, smoke was rising from a mountain
Like smoke signals of tribal chiefs
Communicating cautionary warnings
Of smoldering events ahead
I saw wild animals roaming the frontier
Frolicking in the prairie and dancing around trees
But the grasslands were strange, abnormal, out of place
For I saw transparencies of skyscrapers, buses and highways
And a montage of unnatural faces
Like in a Fellini movie
Appear like ghostly icons in a traveling circus
Evaporating into my nomadic dream
And everything around me was slowly vanishing
Into the valley ahead
Into a boundless black hole
Where light surrendered its gleam
I stopped walking for a moment
To transform this troubling scene
For it seemed so disorienting
And so obscenely unclean
For the sky was on fire
Choking up dust
And the machines that still were running
Were covered by rust
The smoke rising in the distant horizon
Spread out torrid words
Across the evening sky
Where souls were traveling in herds
And minds bowed to repetitive rhymes
My transformation left unanswered
I immediately wondered upon reading this whether it might be based on a recent dream. Alex's comment echoes my first thoughts in reaction. I also find your final note on "transformation left unanswered" fascinating. the selective rhyme sews this up nicely without overtaking the nuanced images. Well done. Dawn
I do not know what to say Robert...this left me unnerved by the realness in which you presented this...this is the end...excellent.
Where there's smoke, there's fire. I see a lot of people caught up herds of boring rhyme wasting away their alotment of days.
Robert, I so admire the way you dream and the inspirations that comes into your dream.
I, too, dream about the weirdest dreams, and when I awoke the next morning, I would say to myself, "Where did that come from?"
I think the reason for this dream has a lot to do with the messages that were advertized on the TV about "Hiroshima". Although you are too young to realize the reality of this, but had learned this from history, and it stuck in your mind.
The last two stanzas worry me a bit. Hope history will not repeat itself.
Strange dream, but "Hiroshima" and what had happened must have somehow stuck on your mind before you went to sleep.
"Where souls were traveling in herds
It is indeed a strange and dificult guilded cage we have made for ourselves. A sad and tragically beautiful poem of life...
Robert,
My first reaction was to close my eyes and take cover, but one has to realize the impact of the dream.
It's scary to watch yet one can't turn away.
Stunning imagery Robert.
I believe that prophetic dreams are given to some people and not others. Maybe the end is coming sooner than we think. You have the ability to transfer dreams, which can be so complex, to the average person, like me.
These dreams bring the reader to a state of fierce weariness that both opens the mind, shuts down the heart, but expands the soul. I think you are on to something great here Jude.
I would love to read Retta's take on this; sounds to me like a collapsing down telescopically of American time and space, specifically, in this instance. Yes, I know, but we've all got to clean up our act a bit! I found it difficult to place you, in this dream, Jude, but I liked the way the POV seemed to have the capacity "To transform this troubling scene"... "he who has ears to hear"... quite a Revelatory dream, this one!
... And here's a funny thing... I woke up on holiday one morning with a "statement" in my mind that I just couldn't shift... about the whole of life one day fitting into just one envelope. Yes, bizarre, but it won't go away, so if anyone has been seeing a big A4 Manilla Tuff-mail floating about in the clouds, please do let me know... or, perhaps answers on a postcard...
Whatever, it is time we began to take note of what the signs obvious and paranormal might be saying to us before the herds become the dinosaurs. Thanks for your willingness to be a Messenger, Jude. Sobering. TY Kate xx
Perhaps this is especially poignant for me, Jude, because you are a New Yorker... made me realize that the hunger for open, untouched, pure spaces are of the human nature, not environment.
I like the way you punctuated your thoughts with differently composed verses, in length and space. It gave importance to each... while your words provided the poetic glue. katy xox
This is an awesome write! You have such a superb way of channeling your thoughts, and depicting your dreams so they come to life for the reader! Wish I could do that;-) A haunting dream that chills the spine and inflames the senses.I also think the rhyme seemed to enhance this particular dream.
Sounds like a truly deep prophetic apocalpytic dream to me, Jude - and it's quite chilling.
