~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can still see
The icicles
Forming on your roof
Traveling around the entire edge
Like a chilly
Barrier of icy thorns
Warning me to venture away
From the entrance
To your wintry dwelling
Where only a solitary candle
Lit the entire house
As a silhouette peered from a window
And my breath
Like a displaced spirit
Remained
My only companion
Entering a world of solitude -- painful experience even as I read it. Placing that experience in a place void of warmth was smart writing.
Eerily romantic with just a touch of the surreal thrown in to make the imagination soar away with meanings old and new. ONly you can capture the essence of reaching out as you do. Great piece here Jude.
Thank you for all the wonderful reviews you did of my work as well.
Awwww... this breaks my heart! Are you sure the silhouette isn't anxiously watching out for "your" arrival, keeping that bright little candle lit as a vigil for your return?! :)) And perhaps the icicles are actually cute little fairy lights, waiting to be illuminated as if to say "Surprise!" when the person spots the longed-for face? Sorry, don't mean to be facetious, but the starkness and sparsity, as Dawn has said, makes this a very naked write which begs some sort of desire to move in for the BIG HUG! This sooooo reminds me of the imagery of my poems Frosted Glass and The Spy Who Came In From The Cold - especially with some of the comments as well! I must be truly wonky, cos I keep reading the last 5 lines not how they is writ, as if the person inside the dwelling is being addressed as "My only companion" thus: "As a silhouette peered from a window, and my breath like a displaced spirit remained, my only companion." In my own situation, I can relate to this "isolation" in reverse... I feel so ring-fenced by love and attention, it is like a firewall round me keeping me from getting out and getting on with my life; I am gasping for breath, trying to fight my way out to the gym! :)) Lovely to be spoilt rotten, but, honestly... a girl's got things to do, after all! Think I'd take the bold approach and go knock on the door, if I were you; you might find some mistletoe waiting on the other side! And what a shame if you had perceived things all wrong, after all. Sorry, just some flash fiction goin on in my head here... powerful and intense, Jude and something which, in one way or another, we can all relate to - but usually like the sharp intake of breath before the moment of resolution, perhaps. Insightful and incisive, thank you. LOL Kate xx
because of its sparse words and haunting images, this poem captures the isolation felt when another seems unreachable, locked inside an icy prison. I think I have been both people in this poem, and, having been the one inside not really meaning to chase away a spirit so filled with love and goodness and warmth, I would like to think you will pass this house again and find it well-lit and you, a welcome presence. A chilling write about how being lonely on the inside makes the whole world outside seem icy-cold, unfriendly and bitterly exclusive of us. Some of us are solitary beings and we walk through most of our life with only our spirit and our faith as our constant companions. When we feel our spirit slump, we seem drained of our usual inner strength; the world seems so very dark and cold and our heart emptied. Often times as we attempt to change our outlook and our state of mind, we find our heart is guarded by barriers that are difficult for us to break down, even for the love of self. Feeling estranged, even from our self, the light can seem so very far away. Excellent write of desolation, Jude.
Take care,
Sherry
The lonely isolation voiced in this poem is the most powerful I've ever read! It made me image a sculpted ice scene, hoping it is not copied from reality.I'm chilled...Brrrrrrrrr... Superb work as always!
I had a very similar few paragraphs in my last-released novel, the wintry dwelling being a sod house in Nome, Alaska and the skull and crossbones of a caribou with the cranium still attached gave a warning message just like your barrier of icy thorns. The silhouette peering from my sod house is Raven Seven Dreams, matriarch soothsayer who reads the caribou scapula in a divining fashion. Thanks, Jude for this companion to mine.
