Beautiful Robert,really,and as I read this I could picture those gleaming faces round the tree.Your poem inspired an image in my head,remining me of something,the hands joined together upright praying sort of resemble the Christmas tree,wide at the base then narrowing up to a tall finger tip point.Praying for peace and the Christmas tree are so similar somehow.My favorite lineS:

... Reminds me a little of the classic Brit Coca-Cola ad, sung by the New Seekers (appropriately named band!): "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing In Perfect Harmony". This is so warm and all-inclusive, Jude. Could be like a jubilant couple, celebrating and holding their precious newborn in their arms as they consider HIS potential importance to the world, and their desire for the world to be a "safe place" for him to live and grow to the full. Might also be said to conjure images of the world's loving fraternity gathered in one hopeful, holy place, united in their peaceful intent; holding the hope for the world in their "upright/righteous" hands - either being those on whom hope for the future rests, or the fact that they are engaging in the faith of all others they represent. Whether intimate or universal, personal or corporate, it has that quintessential "all will be well with the world" Christmas message of optimism that proclaims in itself "Goodwill To All Men"... and women and children. Love it! And always knew I would be found out for putting conifer needles instead of nutmeg into the mince pies... :)) A very heraldic write, TY LOL K xx

All of your images pluck memories from the archives of my childhood, when the best part of Christmas was always the warmth that one gets when family comes together in common thoughts of peace, harmony, love and hope. (and of course my cousins new bicycles and guitars). ;) Christmas is all of those things and honestly should be more about that than about all the pretty packages placed under the tree. Christ was given to us that we may learn to love one another as God loves us. At times I feel it may have been a wasted gesture since mankind continues to anihalate each other, but perhaps we need to slip all the way to the bottom of the abyss before we understand that we always held the power to rise up and soar to the highest of heights. It is the simplicity of this poem that gives it its strength as so very often less is more. You leave spaces that the reader can fill, thereby injecting themselves and creating poetery that is very much alive. Damn good write, Jude. Merry Christmas!
