Sometimes it takes a lengthy illness to put things
Back into a healthy state of mind
Though weak and battered
You feel ready to take on the world,
Invigorated and all the batteries are recharged
Sometimes its takes a bad fever
That almost brought you close to death
That makes you prolific again
And rekindles your will to live
And burns off all the impurities
Festering in your veins
And growing in your lungs
And all the hellish nightmares
That poured through your mind
As you laid coughing up your guts
Have transformed your perspective
Of remembering how to breathe
Purging all the infection
From your body and soul
And a sense of well-being
Rises from the aftermath of being a sick zombie
And reconstitutes the fibers of your heart
And allows you to dream again
And heals you of your madness
This is reality for me. Having conquered serious illness myself, I can endorse all that you've said in this excellent poem. I feel charged up and ready to conquer the world now.
Thanks for this
~Chanti~
Egads! Sounds like you were seriously sick with the flu. This poem confirms the credo, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."

Being both Bi-polar, and a sufferer of Lupus, I can "hear" you loud and clear in this 'hits home' poetry.
Hope you are up and well and smiling into the sunshine of spring, Jude.
Mental and physical pain of illness is three-fourths fear, and as it becomes less acute, rationality and spirituality merge and on the whole, healthy life is motored not so much by reason as by emotion, and of the many emotions that crowd a woman's/man's life, the most powerful is love. Even hate can be interpreted as a rebound of illness. Be well, lead poet.
I had to spend a night in the hospital as a precaution a little over a week ago and I can relate to this. Sounds like you were worse off than I was, but I could still relate. Illness does make you think.
You are right, Jude; and it works for "mental" ailments as well (such as mood disorders and depression). Thank you for sharing your insights. Love and peace,
... Better than pills and potions, knew there must be a reason I am feeling so very calmly insane at the moment... I am bein purged and cleansed... well, about time, I guess... and is that a magnified pic of your soggy tissue? S'OK, I'm just awakening from the long, dark night of the sick Mummy myself and if my humour seems black and bleak, then at least guess I'm a true Brit... and DEFINITELY my Mother's daughter! My excuse is that I have absolute certainty in my heart that she is happy and at peace, and, at this point in time, absolutely nothing else is worth more to me than that. Yep, Sweet Dreams are to be looked forward to agin shortly, I trust... Here's to waking up On The Sunny Side Of The Street! :)) K xx

There is something about being slapped hard by illness that does make us reach deep for our will to live and bring out our "fighting the demons" spirit. The feelings of accomplishment for survival are an amazing high, especially as we look back at where we were and how easy it would have been to accept death instead of the fight. Well written, Jude, nothing like a real kick in the pants to get us out of our depressed funk, eh? It kinda puts everything in perspective and reminds us that we really do embrace this life we are granted.
Take care,
Sherry
Your work is timely and well done.
I agree with almost every word.
But, by God, and by Damn, there were times
when I didn't think that my renwal would
be wotth all of three weeks suffering!
Thanks much. - Bill

You got every damn word of this right, Dr. Forese. Hang your shingle.
Can relate. Great write! There is definately a shift in perspective and for some, conciousness(sp?). We take health for granted until we're stricken and what joy to be strong again! Glad you're feeling better, Jude. Cool pic...

the picture has me fascinated. such truth in the poem. I've definitely experienced that rejuvenation / reconstitution after brief (but seemingly endless) illnesses. have to admit I'm still waiting to be fully healed from my madness. life is interesting. Dawn

Truth in verse, very well done. BRAVO!!
Sometimes it takes illness to bring you back to the basics--to ask for strength for the journey and the grace to survive it with gratefullness. :)
