Fuel of Possibility ... Lost in the Present

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She hugs her pillow
Staring into shadows on the wall
Sleep is an intermittent condition
Dreams are lost moments
Tears are constant companions
She recalls the time
When life was filled with meaning
When lips squeezed together
And smiles surrounded her world
Snuggling into her slippers
She walks to the window
Slightly opening the curtains
Taking a peek outside
She sees the grand rush of living
The lovers walking, the children playing
The buses crossing the avenue
As traffic lights flash red to green
And she wonders
If she’ll ever fit back into life's movement
Or remain a ghost lost in the present
Without direction or substance
There’s a knock on the door
But she decides not to answer
She sits in the kitchen
And smokes a cigarette
Until the knocking stops
Then only she runs to the door
Opens it with desperate hope
But no one is there
Only the vapor of her sighs
Accompanies the fuel of possibility
She reevaluates her misplaced longing
Closes the door
Perhaps it’s time to step outside
A discussion poem on the healthy watching of our environment vs. shutting ourselves off to the world. Being a creative artist of many mediums, I have to watch my environment as to who I associate with. Most people are negative and I don't allow those in my life as it interferes with my positive creative process. But there is a difference when we shut out those who truly care about us because of a lost love or a crisis. From a spiritual point of view, love is seen as attracting energy that pulls to each person whatever material physical change is needed for that individual's growth.
If she does overcome her fears and step outside, then my hat's off to her. Overcoming ourselves is usually the most difficult challenge any of us face. Enjoyed this thought-provoking poem, Jude. ~~Nordette
Quite a story of self-imposed exile--with feeling.
I love this cameo capture... a portrait that could so well typify many of us highly creative, lost-in-the-worlds-of-our-own making types... I can so relate; I ingest the fuel of my possibilities, as if adding flesh to the bones of potential "real" life, only, in fact, to resist entering into the pseudo-world of my own creation, ultimately proving, perhaps, that I prefer to merely inhabit the ultimate dream. As so much of your work, this appears deceptively "simple" because of the facility of expression and narrative... but tantalising ambiguity permeates the soul of this poem, I think... and for me, the question begs at the end: "Aha, but WHICH side of the door has she already now placed herself on??!!" THAT, my dear Watson, is the key to her future, perhaps... LOL Keyhole Kate :)) xx
Outstanding Jude. Loved the way you wrote this, how deep and excellently you described the way this feeling of quiet and desperate longing.
It's been awhile since reading you; the starkness of this work is what I remembered most. Yours is a very soft hardness that always gets me to think long about what you've drawn me into.
There is a subliminal disturbance, which melds the trepidation of the character described. I liked the third person POV, which allows a reader to see the universal aspects of the struggle blurring out the personal aspects.
Its not easy making the chances we must take on and this poem shows the fight from darkness to light. Bravo!
It seems that as the world becomes more and more complex, we find ourselves hiding in the secure confines of our house and with each passing day have less and less desire to venture out. What is the point? It is a big and scary world out there. No one cares anyway. I just can't face another dog-eat-dog day mingling with the masses. Whatever the reason, there is a type of tranquility that comes as I turn the key and lock myself in for the night, though I know that I must venture out tomorrow and be a part of the world in which I live. This write has the percision of a great surgeon, disecting the healthy tissues from the diseased and assessing the ones that fall somewhere in the middle. Excellent, Jude!
Take care,
Sherry
she sounds depressed, withdrawn and grieving the past...remedy's come from within, however they can be stimulated/fueled from the outside - laughter, music...spirals lead up or down, after they bottom out they are able to return upwards...whenever she wants to
Jude, this is exactly how I have been feeling lately. My circumstances might be different, but the emotion you conveyed in this poem is spot on. How do you do it? Is it a collective loneliness we are all experiencing, that you've managed to tap into? In looking over the reviews I'd say you stuck gold with a lot of the women here. I wish there were someway we could all fuel our possiblities. Drown our fears and leave the present behind.
Be well. ~ Sara
You captured her feelings of desperation perfectly...does she stay cocooned in isolation, or open the door to possibilities.
Brilliant Jude!
This is amazing and so well written. It is unusual for a man to be able to enter the thoughts and movements of a woman, but you have done it here.
Dear Ace,
Sounds to me like this person is lost within the past. Once she gathers the courage to step outside, she will find the present, within which the possibilities of her future will grow.
Been there, done that, without the cigarette! The pain of lost love can be so hard it can blind us to the fact that maybe it wasn't the right person for us anyway, and maybe the right one is about to appear.
