~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A group of fishermen
Stand beside their fishing poles
Lodged into the sand
Like pointers to the sky
Almost invisible fishing lines
Are decorated with seaweed
Flapping like blue and green banners
Upon the salty breeze
Seems to be a good day
Catching sea robins by the score
Then casting them back
To rejoin their homeland
People stand and watch
In curious amazement
Standing in awe and glee
The fishermen have big smiles on their faces
I just wish
They were fishers of men
Me, too, Brother..
Love the way YOU put the hook in OUR mouths, and then reel us in with this beauty, Jude!
Often wonder if they feel the hook, thrown back or not. Reminds me of a short film of a greedy man catching striped bass. He finally runs out of food, and, seeing a candy bar, picks it up, unwraps it, and takes a bite,... Only to feel a big hook in his mouth, a line go taut, and he's pulled into the sea.
I just LOVE this! So many good points have already been made and Biblical parallels abound. I especially like the joie de vivre here... so much after the heart of the Big Guy himself. Lesser mortals tend to use drag nets to grab everyone by the scruff of the neck into one great mass, whereas I'm a firm believer, myself, that God is a "pole man"... meets each unique individual right where they're at; sharpens their understanding of life beyond their immediate knowledge and experience, then graciously liberates them back into their plane of existance to enjoy "life in all its fullness" in a different way, perhaps. No wonder folks is intrigued and happy; I've only ever known God to surprise and delight when He shows up to instill some kind of drastic needed change. A lesson to be learned here, maybe, about the correct usage of power and control. Nurturing and uplifting write, Jude, TY Kate XX
There is much deception and distraction in this world.
I am a firm believer that there is one Truth, and He is a man that is coming again. It's funny when you cannot be moved in something. Its like wisdom starts pouring into you and your eyes are opened to something you never imagined.
I appreciate you dear poet. You always make me think. You are blessed with an inquisitive mind. I believe that you are destined for the Kingdom.
In fraternity and poetic vision ...
An interesting twist to the day at the shore...and perhaps they were fishers of men as they captivated all on shore...a following. You spur the mind with your pen and your imagery Jude...always fascinating to read.
I imasgine if they are such good fishermen, they would make good catchers of men too. I like the thought (if it's the one you meant;-) You always give something to ponder...
and if they were fishers of men and caught them, then what? throw 'em back to the sea? spear 'em and put 'em on display? you've got me thinking about the myriad possibilities. mostly, this poem makes me wish I could see those fishermen smiling. I've gone fishin' in my mind. Dawn
Wouldn't it be awesome to fish for the demons of this world and gut them like a bull shark...life should be so easy. Love the way you challenge my mind and creative side.
It is funny how famous quotes from the most famous of men can materialize in our images from seeing day to day sights such as your fishermen. You touch just the right history strings to pull yesteryear back into 2006. Well done Jude.
As a directional metaphor as Amish wind vanes! Amish guide men fishers and farmers with simplicity, why there are no N-S-E-W directionals on the Amish vanes...the Amish know where they are going and who they are casting to rejoin their homeland. Hook, line, and sinker, Jude!
Ah, Jude, we have had fishers of men, but the world these days scorn them. Instead we seem to be on a one way path to destruction. beautiful poem and sentiment.
