Misconceptions of the Heart

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The moment you entered the room,
Colors grew brighter
And shades began to bloom
The roaring cacophony of voices
Were hushed into silence
As the activity of chatting hands
Became suspended in time and place
As you walk across the ballroom floor
You floated like a feather on a zephyr
And the contours of your lips
Spoke in hushed tones of sparkling light
Only the heart can hear
As your eyes crossed mine
The world disappeared from view
But as you passed me by
Your vision seemed no longer clear
Lingering in mixed signals
Questioning my relevance
Still I could not get over
How your presence apparently danced only for me
Until you looked over his shoulder
And smiled into my direction
There are no 'mixed signals'; only sly intent. Wonderful write, as always; you never fail to tantalize with the way you effortlessly weave together the passion, the flow and the imagery; smooooth. And this is quite a universally appealing motif as well; most everyone has had this experience and can strongly relate. -- Jeff
You frame the environment of this wonderfully with the rhyming of your first stanza here, Jude: this is a poem about the heart and soul, a word-painting of the inner landscape as seen through the relief and contours of the external situation and circumstance. The heart has no reason and no amount of cognitive thought can dicatate to it what it understands. It receives sensorially and expresses its findings through feeling. I love the title, which gives us the dynamics and compass-bearing. I don't think you are making judgments about perceived actions here... you are, perhaps, rather plotting the course and mapping an instantaneous reaction between two essences whose chemistry interacted and thereby changed on coming into contact with each other. I think you catalogue here the intial heart response, the feelings, that the mind struggles to analyse, interpret and make some kind of sense of in terms of the impact being made. It's the sense of slow-motion about the turn of events here that make me think along these lines. I get the impression that many backward glances between the two are going down unseen here... not just the unengaged gazing over a dance-partner's shoulder when the conversation runs dry. I like your final line, which to me suggests that, having made all the mental calculations in the meantime between that first kinetic eye-contact and the subsequent smile, you might find that you have an unexpected travel partner riding alongside you when you finally decide to hit the road! :)) Reminds me I have a poem brewing about Averted Vision... something to do with not being able to look too directly at bright light, or something that impacts our soul too dramatically, because of the intensity... having to look slightly away, like from the stars in the sky at night sometimes, in order to see them more clearly in peripheral vision. Makes a lot of sense, that, don't it?? Language of the heart, I guess! :)) LOL Kiera Kate xx
You capture that moment when we encounter someone we know is important to us in some unknown way. That one revealing glance that changes us and makes us want to pursue all of the questions, often is the only time we shall meet in this lifetime. Surely, someone who touched our soul in a single glance must be a comrade who travels with us throughout many lifetimes, but this time, our missions have taken separate pathways and we are granted only that single moment in time. Very nicely executed, Jude.
Take care,
Sherry
