~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Washing clothes by a lakeside
Unblemished by machines’ modern-day currents
An air of contentment
Beams from her cheek bones
Cleaning her family’s garments
Against a large stone
She watches her children
Play about the water’s edge
Casting small branches and leaves
Into the water
Imagining decorated canoes
Transporting bold spirits to convene with the forest god
She smiles then looks up to the sun
Absorbing its warmth
Wondering about her lifelong companion
Hunting in the underbrush
Sparkling ripples
Reflect magic onto her children’s faces
Uniting with her heart’s embrace:
Emblazoned womanhood soaring
Very spiritually-bonded write, at great oneness and with all defences down. How things should be... the huntergatherer doin his stuff and the nurturerprotector doin hers... what golden children are raised in such an environment. Rubbed down and naked... I like! What Dale said tonight, bout "The purpose of flesh is the consummation of spirit"...
Struth washing my undergarments on the river, no way known, not here in OZ LOL.
Seriously though, the act of washing day, chores with the kids, teaches them, it's bonding at it's best, we all need it. Too many children never help the mother, lack disclipline and are lost little tackers.
I always strive to teach them self sufficiency as they will need it one day, and they love it, like bees around the honey pot :)
Mind you if the machine goes on the blink, I tread the clothes in the shower...Most my ppl do from Aotearoa.
Fabulous write Jude
A dreamer's buckskin soul traveling back through time to the era of creation and simplicity, the Garments of Womanhood has modern-day symbolic weight which fosters the braiding of buffalo hair and embroidering moccasins in a rebirth of modern-day women, children, and men's survival guide when the last hunt of the video games is taken down with a Clovis spearpoint and buried in the 'Dunes' with the other ruinous video games in the boneyard and burned, and the bloody age-old game of the Indians La Crosse is played where it all comes out in the wash by rubbing white corn meal on stains of society...I'm proud to wear this simple, clean poem, Jude...
Exquisitely rendered human lifescape. Transforms a moment of simplicity and the "mundane" into one of spiritual depth and magical splendor.
Sweet like maple sugar, this one sings of native american culture and I love the way you have presented it as if you were strolling along and just seen the beauty and simplicity of the moment. Great stuff my friend.
This reminds me of Guatemala, where women did their laundry in the waters while their children played. The ladies would then lay their clothes out to dry in the sun then set up their looms and make colorful fabrics. Nature's landscape seemed so much nicer than the parks that we have built here. Excellent images, Jude, you sparked memories for me.
Take care,
Sherry
Kipling feel to this.
But it does make one ponder, as to should we still have these life styles in 21.Or should we go back to them to save the planet.
I'd do a lot more fishing if that were the case...
You have painted the woman who appeared in my poem Motion - how lovely, she washes clothes by the Lakeside too? - i would love to write as warmly as you have here (and of handwashing which is such hard work and leaves your hands sore!) of peaceful moments, contentment, belonging...i liked it.
