Misplaced Longings

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She spent the entire day trying to remember
Where she placed her feelings
Did she leave them in the empty flower vase?
Or perhaps she locked them away in the closet safe
Failing to remember the combination?
Were they living out
In the high definition resolution
Of her plasma TV?
Where soap operas played out
A daily entourage of misplaced characters
Living in a world of emotional disarticulation
Perhaps she left them in her jewelry box?
The one with the small pixie dancing on top
Spinning around in small circles
Accompanied by musical chimes
Of a melody she had long forgotten
Sparking inside with gems of past affairs
Possibly she left them in the attic
Where curious of her childhood
Housed the museum of her memories
Where sunbeams fused into the dusty atmosphere
Through torn curtains
Neglected by the silence of dreams
Waiting for the respiration of her heart
To resurrect their substance
She spent the entire night
Staring into the fireplace
Wondering how her feelings
Became so consumed by her misplaced longings
WOw!
This is exceptionally penned and articulated, Jude...and you should hear how it sounds, being read to the sax-only version of "Town Without Pity"!
You are so gifted, Brother..
At least she realized that her longings were misplaced. She could have just given that rotating pixie on the top of her jewelry box a little **boing** and went back to her soaps.
NICE write.
Misplaced Longings! A powerful title for an equally powerful write, Jude. So many face this dilemma. It's sad, especially when you know or are close to someone dealing with this. Great job, and so well delivered!
I wondered where you were going with this and enjoyed the development of this character...and then as I read the last lines I literally gasped. It is masterful in its expression. This is one of the few times I've gone back to read a poem for a second time. Such insight you have Jude. Well done!
So many rooms of the psyche to misplace longings...the smell of moth balls huddled together from packed-away emotions and the flashbacks of sepia-tinted dreams and tin-type memories stored in the scrapbook, but the sparkle of revival to misplaced longings is in the cameo brooch in the bottom of the cedar hope chest that gives a new breath to these lines,
"Waiting for the respiration of her heart
To resurrect their substance"
This has such a weariness about it that is crippling in terms of its scope - reaching back to the dim and distant past; galvanised by the surreal present, and defenceless and without sensory radar for the unknown future. A portrait that is storybook, wrought with compassion and crafted with care - like Brothers Grimm! Has an altogether adult complexity about it, though, as longings, in particular misplaced ones, tend to get established through habit over a very long period of time and, like clinging ivy, are very hard to cut yourself free of. And those are the very ones that tend to anaesthetise and suffocate our ability to think and feel anything outside of them. I think this "her" is in need of a handsome young woodsman to come aknocking at her door to shake her from her reverie and to produce some fresh timber with which to stoke her fires afresh! :)) LOL K xx
Jude, you capture the feelings of people so well, and paint a picture in our minds of how we are sometimes ourselves. A lost day, looking for lost feelings... haven't we all done this??? Excellent write.
Sometimes we give ourselves "stuff" to try and fill in all of our personal voids, but (hopefully) we learn that we don't change who we are or our life situation by putting up new curtains, rugs and bath towels. If we are going to grow we must do that introspectively and if we fail to take the responsibility for making those changes, we end up with misplaced longings and misplaced feelings and needed changes that may never come. Very thought provoking poem, Jude and it can be read so many ways.
Take care,
Sherry
The compass does get skewed sometimes and the results are less than desirable.
It is one of the reasons that I desire to be in the mountains hiking so much - getting in touch with what's important is a natural occurence there. A powerful psychological extrapolation Robert.
