~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have walked through many a mile
Have negotiated the authentic
From the deceptive
Have arbitrated wrong from right
Looking up while others are looking down
Have seen through specious offerings of trust
While speaking in tongues of incredible indifference
Have thwarted being bamboozled
By laughter acting behind my back
And sneers smiling before my face
By the sheer will of my convictions
By the gut of my instincts
By living in streets of cosmic design
I look into the collective mind
Of this crowded city
I walk through
Seeing through the window
Of friendly faces
On the boulevard of bogus teardrops
Trying to capture the mind of my soul
Have stood before the specter of truth
Unraveling its potential design
Forming within me
Becoming stronger and wiser
Walking through miles still yet to be known
Very good. There's not much profound poetry I like (my mind operates at a Dr. Seuss level)but this is strong. I like the idea of a sneer smiling.
Adore this turn upon which the poem seems to hinge, Boyo... a neat handle on your modus vivendi, it seems to me. Also the ambiguity of the "Trying to capture the mind of my soul" - who's tryin to do the capturin!! :)) And, as I've already said somewhere I am sure, a MUST for your Voice to recite.
And I've seen fire and I've seen rain, James, but just about made it home again against the raging Dorset tempests... And did I also mention that I found your tree whereon hangs your branch Bound By The Winds Of Time? It's now fallen from a cliff (the whole tree, that is) and onto the far end of my precious beach: the dunes there are replaced by unstable sandstone/chalk walls. I'm only tellin you this cos, apart from the rock and roll of the lilt of it, this poem strikes me as strongly reminiscent of the movement and tone of that earlier write. Again, think this is one of your strongest pieces and most well-constructed.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone. My, my, what musical mood I am in this evening...
Ah... Dulce Domum... East you may wander, west you may roam in the spirit of venture and discovery... but there's no place quite like it, eh?
This powerful piece exemplifies so many lessons learned through one's life experience in the city. Seen through the perspicacious eye of the poet, the final couplet lends words of optimistic wisdom and wonder:
"Becoming stronger and wiser
Walking through miles still yet to be known"
"Oh it's sweet to know
The wisdom that living brings." -DH
Whohoa!...musing,...speculating,...people watching,...emotionally growing,...a life path that can be craggy,...but I believe that whilst that journey can be treacherous it also is the most rewarding. Striking words that left me contemplating. Happy holidays Jude. Panda :)
MILES STILL YET TO BE KNOWN: A poem, for this reader, like an illuminated soul, seeing, feeling, shining, absorbing all in spite of itself, allowing hurt and joy alike to compose the ups and downs of its journey at will. A great meditation for the end of one year and the beginning of another. Much gratitude,
"Trying to capture the mind of my soul" Nice line!!!!
The journey of our lifetime is studded with lessons, some seeming like blessings, the others being sort of blessings in disguise. Each step on the path takes us closer to our desired goal and each should be embraced for their value and not cursed for their infliction. What lies ahead? If we look deep within, we will probably find that answer. Nice work, Jude. I commented on this yesterday but for some reason my review didn't appear here. Merry Christmas!
Take care,
Sherry
Learning to walk is a lifetime obligation:
Through walking we experience in sights and sounds,
we endeavour something new, and something unknown.
This journey is walked daily,
but it is yet to be explored.
Looking into the collective mind, or collective physiognomy of New York City must be an awesome experience. Like looking into the firing synapses of a human mind on PCP.
Hopefully Robert, as we all navigate the relentless river of time, we will become better people - more compassionate - more understanding - more intelligent - more lucidly creative - and hopefully our love for our fellow travelers will be in proportion with our own insights. In this also is a riddle to be solved.
