Shallow Skin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So engrossed in one’s own conclusions
Legitimacy is analyzed by a quirk of reason
Motive drips through the densest membrane
As a striated frequency of self-dialogue
Hampering the vibrancy of tone and color
To intercede into the conversation
So absorbed in one’s own perceptions
Accuracy is a blur in the motion of thought
Dreams are left to forage to their own intrusions
Symbolic passions lose their affect
So wrapped up in one’s own delusions
Only aloofness is close to the heart
Denial and defiance
Spurt forth spoils of self-induced war
The aftermath of fallout
Grows feverishly under shallow skin
"Shallow Skin"
"self-induced war
Whew I know a few people around like that...self absorbed.
A sparkling penning again Jude.
So wrapped up in one’s own delusions
Only aloofness is close to the heart... Ivory tower stuff here...
We speak but never listen. When we listen, often it is only to the sound of our own voice. We rehearse over and over our own arguments and postulations before we ever take on board the points of others. Few hear - to hear means to be open enough to take on board what is being said without prejudice. No wonder the world is at fever pitch.
A nice show of this your craft or sullen art, DT! Written for the lovers, their arms round the griefs of the ages... and not for the arrogant or the towering dead. Too many of us follow the dead edicts of all that has gone before (often bancrupted)... rather than to follow the prophetic notes of the tunes of the future. TY K xx
There are many takes below on this poem Robert. There are also many ways to deal with what passes through the heart and mind for an artist or a writer. Some are good at it, some are not!
Ranting or venting is legitimate as far as I'm concerned, as long as you're dealing with the spirit of the matter and not the fallen nature of the human. Everyone has problems and is need of repairs mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Some poets and writers are quite obvious about their disdain for anothers work or character. Detestably so! Some are not so obvious. Some poets and writers are only interested in trashing what they see as beneath them in the realm of words, and some need controversy and discontent to write. Some are just jealous of something they percieve about another which may or may not be accurate.People are complicated!
I wonder if people actually sat down and broke bread with one another, and talked face to face, and even laughed, if there would be such trouble? Keep cutting the edge Robert.
Light and Wisdom ...
Stunning work Robert.
I'll have to say you have characterized a whole lot of people. Isn't it a reality that some would always take another's writings as their own thoughts and then very often go about to characterized that person?
We are all being characterized by many who use their own delusionalized judgments on others, they believe that their own thoughts are the truth, but yet, the one who knows about the other person well is the person themselves.
Poets here on this board are very sensitive. Some of us lead different lives, but our experiences in life are sometimes the same; when we write, we write about ourselves only, about our feelings; but some other poets just took it wrong, and thought you are talking about them.
There is also the matter of giving reviews, even if you SPECIFICALLY STATED that it was only YOUR HUMBLE OPINION, the author still would take to offence at what you say.
I think we all need to learn that each of us do state our own thoughts, whether or not it be in a poem, or it be in a review we view the poem, the readers or authors need not take it to offence at what we say, it is simply one person's opinion toward another.
A writer need to have thicker skin, because if you can't even survive in a writers' site, you can survive the brutal remarks from the critics and editors. That is the reality of it.
One need not beating about to bush in order to help a friend in their writings. One should simply just write to the other person and ask if he/she can make some suggestions in their writings. The latter is of a more welcome thought and action.
What I don't like is that people make mocking poetry about your mistake, rather than to write directly to you to point out your mistake. The latter of the action is so much more clearer to the author, and he/she would be so happy to receive the advice from a fellow writer who does not mock his/her work, but to give direct information on how the author can improve in that piece of writing.
But to write mocking poetry and let other guess what it is who it is for is very cruel to another. It isn't fair to do that to an author who wrote in the order to pour his/her heart and soul out on the paper; or one who does his/her very best to write and thought the work good and satisfied.
A more direct approach to e-mail another about his/her mistake is always a more welcoming act than writing mocking poetry at others. For if you don't, the person would never know, for a person who has poured his/her heart out to write really does not care for how others think of their work, for it is their very own feelings on paper, and is of no concern to others. However, when being approached by another in the correct manner, something good would always come out of it, and the advisor would always be properly thank for his/her advice.
Once again...the above is just MY HUMBLE OPINION.
WOW! "Shallow Skin" has captured the characterization of millions of people. It's kind of like people's minds are a sieve where everything passes through a mixture of thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions to create a whole new picture of what someone else is saying. Thus, communication is watered down no matter how cleanly or expertly stated. Very thoughtful poem and well-written.
People can be so caught up in their own interpretation of what truth is that they refuse to listen to reason. It seems that there are more and more of these "no common sense" people in our world with each passing year; It is enough to make one wonder, in what closet have they spent their entire life? Perhaps it is the feeling of having little control over what is going on in the world and possibly in their own life that causes people to dig their heels in and refuse to listen to alternative thoughts. This one is a heel of the hand slap right between the eyes, Jude. Nice work!
Embracing SHALLOW SKIN as Confucianism, tutelage on the moral order of post-fallout to be reclaimed. Confucius sits here in the Forese den, the centre of a civilized terrace, in an imagined conversation. Forese supervises and maintains harmony by ensuring that poets perform flexible functions ranging from oracular, historical, visionary to outlaw folk poetry. Has a correlation to Book of Changes (I Ching)...Jude, this is wisdom that cannot be marginalized or denied...
