~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sitting cross-legged
In the corner of a dungeon
Exhausted, destitute, held captive
By the decree of unscrupulous powers
Who broke his will to survive
By keeping him barely alive
Setting fire to his village
Leaving all for dead
Tormenting his body and soul
By letting him continue to breathe
Images of blood and mayhem
Branded into the vacant video of his mind
The light barely descends
Through bamboo shoots and scattered palm leaves
The earth smelling like vomit
The sky, a slither of blue
Rats and centipedes
Nibble at his toes
Mud is his clothing
Moans are the center of his dreams
Such desolation befalls a once proud man
Who had the audacity to tell his people their spirits are free
Somewhere in a distant jungle
Under the light of god’s eyes
The unimaginable suffering in this world fostered and promoted "By the decree of unscrupulous powers" appears to be endless and increasing. How is it possible for this degree of hate to exist? How can the suffering of the innocent be allowed "Under the light of God's eyes?" ...questions I hope to have answered one day. The poem stirs strong feelings and evokes a powerful emotional response. The series of couplets are beautifully written and effective. -outstanding work!
This tale is very visual and the benevolence you used in places was intriguing. I have to agree the end was also very much a confirmation nothing goes unseen by Him God in his Greatness.
Excellent work
Stark and very visceral. But I can't imagine that such a one would have a "vacant video" of a mind... far from it, in fact. It must be the strength of his inner light and vision that keeps him alive, I'da thought. But the reality of his presence and character is branded into OUR vacant thoughts, which is a measure of both your rapier penmanship and his compelling witness. Such an aura can never be invisible, even though attempted to be concealed. Truth always finds a way to be revealed, even if it is through cracks in the pavement. Your final line is both a comfort and a confirmation of his greatness, importance and legitimacy. He is protected, if not in flesh, in spirit. The words beat and thrash violently, but the work is centred and poised. Grace will not be stripped from him. He shines. TY Kate xx
I think it was last year alone some 160,000 Christians died in Middle East, Asian and certain Far East counntries. Under the darkness of man's heart - God's light is a measure of His common grace from which both good and bad benefit from.
It is fast becoming difficult to live one's faith in Europe the more it secularises - amazing too when one thinks that it was 16th century Protestant Reformation that wrought liberty to this part of the world - ironic, really.
A thought provoking write, Jude.
A few like Nelson Mandela, prevail. The rest, unheard from, die miserable deaths as the jungle cries for its loss.
A clear message, Jude.
You paint a powerful picture with superb and emotionally devastating imagery Robert. Many humans have lived and ended their days this way because of war and conflict. This poem could also (in my mind) be an extended metaphor for how bad choices can incarcerate our lives, and our freedoms, and place us in squalid forsaken holes of our own making. Bloody persuasive write!
The visuals of this powerful poem are dramatically conveyed!
So many would be:
'Somewhere in a distant jungle
Under the light of god’s eyes'
in such desperate ways!
'Sitting cross-legged
In the corner...' so many doing this meditatively; freedom fighters, political prisoners, Aung San Suu Kyi (who's house arrest is her dungeon), and the elderly Burmese monks in prisons, etc.
Or, even someone with a physical challenge; blessed to be living in a 'free' society freely.
A great poem Jude ... sadly, due to the tragic subject.
Love, Suzie
In a culture that is rooted in conformity, a non-conformist who finds his calling in informing others of his enlightened beliefs, is likely to spend his days in a torturous place, if indeed, he is not killed outright as an example. Seriously potent poetry, Jude.
True today! The honor of a man who fights for the truth is higher than any and, in my mind and heart, he is a saint. Torture, degradation and pain is here to breakdown the man and love rises above all these.Still, he forgives.
This is an earth shaking reality pen Jude.
As Linda said "powerful poetry," but you know, Jude, there are
thousands like the one you describe so eloquently...in THIS country...who are trapped in the 'jungle' of their own mind (in one way or another). It is a sad but true commentary on this world's declining condition.
Continuation of DETRITUS, and you know I LOVE it, Bronx Conan! See what you wrote in DETRITUS,
"All sorts of creatures are crawling through me
Making their home in my framework
Slithering through my cabin"
This SCREAMS Sci-fi screenplay and you know it! It is just too extremely visual to exterminate with D-Con, those little aqua pellets can't kill off a RAT! Breed them suckers into food for thought..."Branded into the vacant video of his mind"...
this is, to me, quite powerful. You've described the conditions of a person who broke the rules that he knew were wrong and spoke the truth, knowing, I'm sure, that the consequences would be grave.
You have not only created the images but you have brought to the mind the use of all the senses while one digests the agony of a man who lead his people by his heart. In this lifetime we will never fully understand the tragic actions that we become aware of. My stomach is feeling a bit weak right now......but that means you have done fantastic writing!......don't know why but whenever I hear about rats nibbling I feel very ill.
