~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just as the wind blows in across the sea
The mist covers my face,
The fog lifts; the sun reveals its warmth
I stumble on a soggy notebook
Propped in the sand among seashells
And barnacle-peppered stones
Damp seaweed is draped like a ribbon
Across faded gold lettering
Obscured by time and exposure
This worn and frail tome arouses my curiosity:
It is tempting me
To decipher its yet elusive contents
Careful not to tear apart its delicate sodden pages,
I peel at the mossy residue
A mysterious presence surrounds my imaginings
As if what it holds is written just for me
I arduously work loose the contents
From this leather-bound “message in a bottle”
The words are smeared in green and blue
As I cautiously pull each page apart
And as I finger my way to the center of the notebook
A few legible lines are finally discerned
“Life is a shadow:
Like an unwritten book
Seeking out its master,
It lingers to be created.”
I place the notebook back onto the sand,
Sit down on the jetty
And wait for the tide to return
Realizing this book was still in progress
Being written by unknown hands
Belonging to the collective sea of dreams
Thanks for your kind comments on my poem, Jude. I love this one so much, I want to return the compliment. A mystical love of water, the sea, the unconscious, mysterious world of the soul. Thanks for uplifting me. In writing our poems we can indeed be free for a brief moment or two. Loretta.
Yes, yes the sea of dreams is vast and a collective. The only way we know, learn and grow being to share the experience(s).
Outstanding piece Jude, BRAVO! So glad to read your works once again!
You know, I’ve had this “eccentricity” ever since I can remember – without knowing why, or how, or where such associations come from, I can hardly ever read a poet’s work without sensing it connected, or related, with some other form of art, usually a visual art or music. Sometimes, that association comes within a more generalized scope – and the works of some poets remind me of the Impressionists, or of the Cubists, or of the Surrealists – and sometimes, it “hits” me with more specific traits – and then, someone’s poetic works remind me of some particular painter’s creations, or of some particular musician’s compositions. When the association “comes” with musical attributes, it becomes, sometimes, even more definite – and, here’s a confession: Somehow, your poetry has always reached me with the more inclusive “music” of the sea, and yet, in many cases, with the more exclusive melodies and harmonies of Karl Jenkins’s “Imagined Oceans”. Such is the case of this extraordinary piece of poetic music – combining, through layers of time that ebb and flow, just like tides do, the creative strokes of… three “composers” expanding, nonetheless, into infinity: The ocean itself, you, and… all those (including, again, the very ocean and yourself) who will go on writing (and reciting, and listening to) the never consumed, even in its constant consummation, “collective sea of dreams”.
Again you left me sitting here with mouth agape and heart beating at the simple but complex beauty of this write. The gentleness of the author's treatment of this ocean captured treasure and the mysteries that this poem offer are amazing. A poem within a poem, a soul captured on the pages then lost? deserted? stolen and thrown away? the possibilities are endless. Me, I see some poor soul lost in this world to the point that even there words have lost their meaning...walkint into the waves with notebook in hand. Jude this will be my favorite work of yours forever. Thank you for sharing it.
Love the voicing in this one, Jude: mellow and contemplative. Also seeking, as if waking from a mental slumber, aware something new is to be sought and found. I was hooked from the very first line and thrown back to you former write, DESIGNING THOUGHTS, and really feel like this is a prequel to that stunning write. I would commend anyone to read it alongside this one, as, in terms of chronology, this is like the quiet "build" poem, and Designing Thoughts is like the loud oratorio, the crescendo. Prophetic thoughts are like that, aren't they? They circle, and return at the "right time" to make another desired impact on the reader. Perhaps you could dig out the recital of DT, too. It was awesome. Sorry.. got me Eds hat on...
I place the notebook back onto the sand,
Sit down on the jetty
And wait for the tide to return
Realizing this book was still in progress
Being written by unknown hands
Belonging to the collective sea of dreams
... This is the crux... this sense of waiting patiently for the next phase of whatever to reveal or unfurl its sails. This confirms to me that this IS a foreshadowing of the voice in Designing Thoughts. I rest my case.
Timely write, Amigo! :)) K xx
This is a dreamy poem, Jude, one that carries the reader onto that beach and to their own imaginings of what might be written in that book, as well as into musings of the holder of the pen who placed them there. Reading from it would be like looking into someone's most private spaces; to be a voyer of someone elses thoughts and dreams. All the while we might be wondering if, perhaps the writer of the words may have actually peered into our dreams and left them written there for us to find; leaving for us the lesson, that even in our dreams, we do not exist in solitude. This is one of your very best poems, Jude, quite a complement considering the vast number of amazing offerings you have left here for us. A keeper for anyone who is/or wishes that they were, a weaver of dreams, a poet of the soul.
Take care,
Sherry
Ancient Greek scientists used the message in a bottle to study the flow of oceans. Early military also used the message in a bottle to relay information to distant troops...but had drawbacks, if the enemy discovered the bottle first, secrets were revealed, why Queen Elizabeth 1 of England appointed an Official Opener of Ocean Bottles. Shipwrecked souls living on deserted islands with little chance of discovery sent their message in a bottle out to sea, detailing their last known location and landmarks, hoping the ocean currents would carry it to an inhabited coastline. Good movie---Kevin Costner's A Message in a Bottle....Good song---Sting and the Police Message in a Bottle....Good poem---Forese's Collective Sea of Dreams...water is the oldest form of transportation...perhaps a whaler lost at sea had the notebook and a waterproof fountain pen in his yellow slicker and quickly wrote to his loved ones, his last will and testament with a passage from the story of Herman Melville's Moby Dick...
