~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A pioneer is constantly on the defensive
For the voice of traditional thinking
Is a maniacal mimic
Growing on the ass of forward motion
Stifling the progressive movement of creative enterprise
Conventional attitude
Is obstructive and obstreperous
And just rubs me the wrong way
If I had to repeat this life over
I would not hesitate to do anything
Different from what I have learned
Or allow myself to be hampered
By laws, conditions, and beliefs
Or by religious morality and political persuasion
Recognized in the jurisdiction of courts
Or practiced in theaters of pious men
Both proclaiming “in God we Trust”
Reminding me to persist
Rousing the progressive trail of ideals
Leaving principles of corrupted composition
And the porous prayers of pretentious sycophants
To the ailing architects of infertile conviction
Where the typical rituals of expression
Fester in the mush of earth
And the fodder of hopeless hearts
Here, the revolutionary spirit
Is always on the offensive
Thankful to be alive and well
And always on the move
The revolutionary and pioneer are, by definition, always forging ahead and are therefore the archetypes of creationist thinking. I like how your portray that, in order to go forwards (and "progress", as we know, if often not in that particular direction!) both offensive and defensive action is required in order to first achieve the ground and then to protect it from erosion. Or, indeed, to part the waves in the first place. Great outpouring of images that are all-encompassing and wide-ranging. Grace and politics are uneasy bedfellows... Grace and religion even more so. Grace and faith go hand in hand and are the essence of all creation. Love the stripping away of all falsehoods here to gain the kernals of Truth and nuggets of gold thrown up by the panning and threshing of the Pioneer Spirit that is alive, well and constantly on the move. There is no such thing as standing still; if we are not moving forwards, we are slipping back. This is a shot across the bows of the dis-eased status quo. And a stark contrast to Sleepless Dreams. Without vision we perish. We need both a goal and a path to walk. The mood and spirit of this write beats the trail and envisages a destination inspite of all that would hinder and prevent. Clarion, Jude, thank you. K xx
It takes revolutionaries to make changes while everyone sits safe in their homes denying there is a revolution or even a problem. Nicely said, Robert. Your work is changing focus. Enjoy every moment.
As a disabled person, I've spent much time breaking rules (and some laws) forging ahead.
Pioneer Spirit is alive and well...to censor a pioneer, free-thinking popular lesbian author and remove her multi-hit-per-day lesbian titles from the hot list "fester in the mush of the earth" ... this poem says so much about what I am about and I would say more, BUT ... let those "Both proclaiming “in God we Trust” wallow in their self-righteousness...the Bronx Conan Warrior and the Firebrand in all of their buckskin and pass the flint-lock and gunpowder...
Love Always,
Sage
In this world today, apathy rules. In my career I have the opportunity to meet thousands of people. One thing I hear most is that people are sick of bad news and just turn away. I keep apprised of all that goes on around me and am always reacting to negatives with positives. I'm a rebel and will never give up on believing that we can make this place a better world.
I agree with this write Jude. The ability or the duty of anyone with a mind is to question authority...which is not to say you are going to be always against them but if somthing is not right it should be challenged and changed. Religion at least organized religion has become a joke and as unbelievable as fairy tales and our political leaders manipulate even the very voting systems that put them in office. Scary world ahead my friend.
When did it all change? When did we stop listening to the intuitive and logical voice within and begin gathering all of our information from without? Perhaps it is a matter of proximity, when we lived far from others, we had to rely upon our own abilities and adaptability. Today, we have traded our survival instincts for dependence and our intuition for accepted behavior. Perhaps it came with the introduction of television into every household, when suddenly, we began judging ourselves by the actions (and appearance) of others and began greedily wanting to live the life of the wealthy jet setters. For me, peace is found in solitude; sitting out far on a jetty, near a rippling stream high up in the mountains, or out in the desert surrounded by sounds of silence and fragrant wildflowers, far away from the information highway. Our lives have gotten so crazy, that many of us won't leave home in the morning without checking the weather; a harmless act, I suppose, but a staunch example of our dependence upon information we could certainly live without, yet have become so accustom to relying upon. The way the masses responded in New Orleans, when the aftermath of Katrina destroyed their city, is probably a preview of the future of all of us if we don't get our lifestyle back to basics, re-learn how to rely upon our own natural instincts and hone our survival skills. Instead of listening to our inner voice, we seem to follow the lead of others, who are as unfamiliar with what is required to survive, as we are. Excellent writing, my friend, albeit a bit reflective, colored with a wash disappointment in the pathway that we have chosen. Oh yeah, before you trade in your Levis and your warm, cozy abode, make sure you have a well insulated loin cloth to get you through those frigid New York winters. Progress is a double-edged sword.
Take care,
Sherry
A powerful write my friend, the pioneer spirit is a spirit is a strong one, they often had to depend on their own inner strength and a personal relationship with God, not boasting, nor broadcasting, just a quiet relationship that each worked out themselves as it should be. I believe that my mother received that pioneer spirit and determination from her father and I from her, and a trait and belief that I feel I have passed down to my children and students...believe in one's self, keep striving no matter what, work for what we believe in, stand for the truth and our values, hold tight to our heritage, and never be ashamed of who we are...press on no matter how hard the fight gets, or how hard we are oppressed...believing in ones inner strength that true pioneer spirit will keep one strong and makes who we are, not phony, not a show, just a strong individual! Great write very inspiring...well done!
Blessings,
Joyce B.
