~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The closer I approach
The mysterious nature of your dreams
You become more cryptic
Even unrecognizable
By the very nature of your implicitness
To articulate what you actually feel
And I am left wandering though the delicate balance
Of living simultaneously in heaven and hell
Like drowning just a few inches
From the surface of the sea
Waves pushing me further under
Then currents thrusting me back up
For quick pulse of air
And it seems that I am missing
Yet have found this self-ordained purgatory
Of static motion
Agreeing to be subject to
The depths of scared wishes
And flames of your fiery embrace
Only to float upon the waves
Of your most sincere indifference and cordial concern
So here I roam this secret desert of hidden desire
And heated refreshment
Simply happy
Just to see the mirage of an oasis ahead
Even within the mirage you have a view that takes us into the mystical thought of your words...you grasp more than the simple reality and combine us with your escape into depths only a true poet can express...
excellent work, Jude...
You have captured perfectly the sensation -- much like drowning -- that threatens to smother us when we try to build and sustain a relationship with an individual who for whatever reason withholds important thoughts and feelings. Perhaps is passive
aggressive? It is maddening! Great work, my friend!! 'Pea' <3
Drowning in the desert. How well you capture my awe of flying six hours over the right-hand third of Africa on Wednesday. For the first three hours, parched brown earth as far as the eye could see, bisected only by the shrivelled veins of two or three river basins. For the next three hours, only sand, sand, sand. We were flying at a speed of nearly 600 miles per hour at a height of about 40,000 feet. The outside air temperature was minus 61 degrees. All I could think was that this small sliver of metal was preserving my life from both extremes… Like the emotional knife-edge you appear to be walking here.
And what a poem of dualisms, inverse thinking and the tension of the relationship of opposites in all respects; all this traffic and non-traffic between an avid communicator and an internaliser. That knife-edge is never more keen than when two symbiotic characters are SO keen to keep the airwaves of understanding clear that the least “falling over the edge” in the emotional tension between them skews the balance of holding things square. Again, your power with words is totally jaw-dropping: not only to produce such an effortless and easily-accessed flow of images and feelings, but also to work through multi-layered applications and opposites in terms of interpretation as well. PLUS you get all the science right! Mirages ARE caused by the image of the REALITY of the oasis being warped (in the eye of the beholder!!) by the varying refractions of differing layers of hot and cold air – especially producing the effect of the sky appearing as water, as you cleverly interweave here. And even that befuddling word “indifference” could mean entirely the opposite, when thought of in the context of “the doctrine of indifference, that of absolute identity where things in thought and existence are one and the same thing”. So, possibly not “indifference” at all but “difference”, i.e. exactly the same! :)) Ho, ho: your favoured poetic ground of parallel realities again; absolute mirror-images that are identical yet opposite. Gobsmacking, Jude. Well, at least it keeps you happy, that’s the main thing! And it would appear that you are producing your very best work, too, which, for a “living poem”, has got to be good!
Anyways, have a cool week while I’m away again. Hope it’s Maria Muldaur you’ve got riding pillion on that dromedary made for two! :)) Love, Kate xx
A very wise man once told me "Never judge another by your own capabilities or your life will be riddled with disappointments." I was young at that time and was taken aback by his words, but I have never forgotten them and I have, for the most part, learned to live by them. So it is with the subject in your poem, who lacks the ability to see behind the veiled curtain of the here and now and who is unable to release her fears long enough to allow her heart to welcome the love of another. Living in such a relationship is unfulfilling at best, even though the sweetness of brief moments can cause us to overlook the reality of the situation. Very introspective pen, Jude, I enjoyed it very much.
Take care,
Sherry
Captured the reality that we can never really be close to another...sounds cynical but in the end we really do just have ourselves and that is ok...the mirage helps us escape the grimness of truth. HUGS
Sometimes we want what we can only dream of having. We settle for less than what we deserve. We are enamored by something this other person fulfills in us; but; it is only in our mind, a dream, a mirage, of something that is but is not everything we truly desire. I come away with the feeling of not settling for just a mirage, but going for the "real thing"..This is what I have been trying to do for a while now. You know something, sometimes, mirages are wonderful.
