~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All warriors
borne the uniform of faraway places
Decorated with mud and blood,
with pride and honor,
with patriotism, memories of home and family
Every crusader
fills the gaps of thought and action
with gunpowder, copper and scrap metal
with disgust and self-preservation
with honor and bravery
Adorning medals, guts and ideology
with teflon tears and detonated fears
Lying side by side in unknown graves,
Sharing body parts and the remnants of tired souls
Surrendering their uniqueness
to the decaying soil
of human nature
As the dreams and aspirations of the populace
Explode into the nothingness of collective confrontation,
depressive screams charge through wild nightmares
Searching for harmony on battle plans of blood
Nourishing the fatal flora of historic civilization
A very intriguing title so well explained by a highly expressive poem.
I love all the contrasting images you have given your readers. If this isn't thought provoking...!? Well done.
Jude you brought this alive to me, the suffering but most of all the loss of uniqueness even if life is spared. A brilliant write that brought my tears.
A poem of two parts with a striking shift in voicing, form and expression in the second half, which comes in like the Big Hit after the observations in the first. As others have said, with the introduction of those "teflon tears" comes a barrage of unique and striking images and concepts ending with that outstanding final metaphor. The final tercet soooooo reminds me of the installation of the pack of baying wolves (they hype and rhetoric of collective idealogies) at the Guggenheim, ploughing into the unseen glass screen, symbolic of the Berlin Wall. Jude, I believe you are at your absolute strongest and most authentic when you write in this vein. It seems to come from the deepest part of your belly and your soul. "the fatal flora of historic civilization" is brilliant. TY Kate xx PS ??Word(s) mssing between lines one and two??
you are gifted with deep and dark word usage taken from the underworld depths of the minds recesses...historic civilization indeed...seems too much is embedded into the human memories of 'wars' and 'battles' i find it a fatal flaw
Wow! A soul from the depth speaks out...and so piercingly incisive. From time measured, we have yet to learn the lessons of those before us. Beautiful statements throughout, Jude...
It has always flabbergasted me when I read of families and their families who join the swervices because their country comes first. So many of our soldiers go to war because it is their right to fight. It's all in how a family raises their children and the heritage that is instilled throughtout these families honor for centuries.
Your pens are always meaningful and full of emotion and your passion. Love and blessings,
Susan
Our inability to harness the competitive nature of the human spirit is the root of the problems that have plagued us since the begining of time. "When all else fails, use force," has been our motto. In so many ways, mankind has evolved but unfortunately communication and the need to control the planet are not included in our evolving. Like pawns on a chessboard, we send our soldiers off to meet their demise in order protect and collect all that we wish to own. Excellent pen.
Take care,
Sherry
The last couplet sums it up with the impact that so well defines the flaws in our civilization. You chose the powerful descriptions this subject needed to craft a remarkable poem!
