ripple affect

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
he spent the entire day
discussing his dead lover
how she unexpectedly threw herself
into the East River
from the Williamsburg Bridge
how he watched in disbelief
as her body floated like Ophelia,
evening dress spread out upon the water,
hair extended like a bouquet of flowers
his lover faded into the abyss
unlike her counterpart
(helpless but to watch)
he became a vessel
whose stern was shattered
on the reefs of anger and confusion
inadvertently, I became a life vest
keeping him afloat
yet , exhausted in his pain
I was barely treading the sea of his sorrow
The pain and sorrow can really be felt,, the way you describe it here, the deep longing and helplessness, too.
Excellent, Jude!
I'm in agreement with Sherry and Charlie's comments. Love the last stanza, in particular. As always, your writing is wonderful.
Was his lover's name Confidense? Gives the poem an entirely new meaning. Perhaps her name was Fidelity? Or Hope? Or Faith? ...so many pure and strong things within us die... Very sad.
Hold on to the good that loves you, and Believe in it! Wish you well--Charlie
Threw herself off the bridge in an evening gown. Boy, she must have been depressed and desperate. And you inherited her counterpart. Not wise, it sounds like you are drowning. Now, this poem is fantastic. The pain and agony are very real. The poem is strong, bold. Excellent write. Liz
Jude
I am so pleased to be able too really see that heart emerging in simplistic, 'raw to the bone real'
I have always held you in high esteem, yet now
You have grown much taller yet, from where I stand.
Well done
Sincerely
This pulls at the soul and sounds very much like an intro to a mystery novel. There is so much left unsaid about the why of it all that it stirs up a story of pain, infidelity, psychosis and a number of other possibilities. Wonderful poem, Jude.
Take care,
Jude,
You take us through this sad tale, trying almost impossibly to comfort a friend over such a tragedy. Thank goodness you threw him your friendship.
Oh My, you said it well, Jude, I just got done costume designing Hamlet, and your description is right on perfect of someone floating in the sea of death and despair.
Intense poetry, are you all right?
