~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I sleep close to the edge,
even closer to the outskirts of sleepless visions
leaving ghostly impressions in the cushion of my thoughts,
dreaming abstractions into the mattress of my convictions
keeping me awake and even more cantankerous
I am hungry but have no appetite;
hungry for a taste of things to come
and arrive with an answer
but I know there isn’t one, only impressions of what’s to be.
so I am famished, anxious
and dreaming of totally consuming nothing
The subject and depth of this literary piece is universal inasmuch as there is hardly an adult alive who has not experienced the bitter pain of despondency, which I perceive in your poem. I can see the relation to the title because the speaker is depressed and hungers for something, but knows not what he hungers for, which is a contradiction. (I've sure done that a lot of times.) Great write.
This poem kind of says "it is what it is"...for now. Wanting that which is unattainable at this time is, as you say, a hunger that cannot be fed. It is also a lesson in futility. Embrace the moment, savor the juices of life, for there is much to be thakful for and much to be amazed by right here, right now.
Take care,
Sherry
Passion held tightly in restraint and composure - a seeking of something/anything real/true tempered by exasperation...these are my initial reactions to this piece, which contains marvelous word choices.
It's good to see Latin lives. As for the poem, it cries out for help from nobody for nothing in particular.
:)) Ach well, seems like most angles have been covered thus far! C'mon Dormouse; wakey, wakey... Here's to a nice cuppa tea all round... that should help restore the RJF beat on the street... We shall just have to eat cake until the manna comes. Great sense of marginalisation - from the knife-edge of the bed to the pushing away of the plate. The nearness of an anticipated expectation bloats mind, belly and senses... and with such a saturation point we can, like Alice, forget what our toes look like! This is kinda ouroboros-sy... yet also seemingly dependent on outside catalysis. Perhaps time to lay off the Kaffeine! Kate xx
well, "i'll be a monkeys uncle" :) much said about nothing, how does one describe one of those abstractions or impressions of what's to be?
There is a lot that can be read into and around this one Jude, for me I see the possibilities that exist each time we sleep and arise we know not what awaits us.
Dear cantakerous poet, (like writing to Abby)
You got me entangle in a web of confusions, being hungry without appetite? famished anxiety, cushions made of thoughts, oh man! oh man! for a moment I thought that I was the only one between the literary padded walls hitting my head with metaphores!
Jude, maybe reductio but never absurdum.
This makes me think of what many of us are driven to in this life when it all is reduced to the absurd. I think the recent things occuring will help reduce the absurd idea that this hunger of the soul can be replaced by consuming the material. Excellent.
Slim-Fast poetry! Remaining gas backed up by the theory after the biggest stars run out of hydrogen and other fuel, sputtering out, sustained, flatulence collapsing under its own gravity into an infinity dense point...quasars light up after reduction ad absurdum-The Big Bang Fart whips around invisible companions of the Milky Way - Black Hole, tight orbit blueprint design of the poetic engineer at his best slumbering awake under the gestation of stars moving through this temporary destruction derby...sleep well in this sedate part of the universe, Jude...
