~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                                       in the shower
                   the skin of shedding selves
                        swirl down the drain
                 i listen to water songs
                            as my mind sinks
                     into the abyss
                i close my eyes
                       imagining my body without its skin,
        a muscular skeleton growing older
                  in the shower, i am immortal
           there is nothing
      but the art of cleansing oneself
          there is nothing
                       but vapor and heat
         to open the pores of past lifetimes
               sweating out the poisons
                           of modern life
                  in the shower
                       i am alone
                  and exposed
                              to the cubbyhole
                   smallness of existence
Excellent composition and word choice. The raw honesty of this poem is intellectually refreshing. Something I'm going to save.
Here I see the analogist, and ratiocinator, at work gleaning inspiration from a ritual that many take for granted. The cleansing of the body, and all that is exuviated, running out along a foreordained path of pipes, and tanks, and processes, where eventually it is reabsorbed into the Earth or the atmosphere. Savoring here a kind of metaphor for the inter-connectivity of all things above and below. Clear creative thinking poet. Peace and continued inspiration ... richard
Splendid. I don't think I shall ever have a shower again and feel the usual way. Thank you, Jude. Love and best wishes,
jude, a daily exercise of philosophical and physical purification -- affirmation of our absolute insignificance to anything other than self -- humbling as it should be to fix us firmly with perspective --I bid you love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael
Wonder where you were when you thought of this one. ;-) There is something in a good shower that releases the muse in us. In this case, superbly.
Rather insightful while selves wash down the drain. Gave me pause to think again of how small we all really all. Love it. Liz
OOOooo... room for a little one?! Love a spot of SM: showers and mermaids, and I know of a steamy siren who is similarly fond of this kind of scalpel-wielding socio-analysis and self-reflexive philosophising right now! :)) The "hinge" of this poem is brilliant: the stand alone, "in the shower i am immortal" is conceptually fabulous, conjoining your images of permanent rinsing and renewing. And the conclusions of our own vulnerability and smallness in the grand scheme of things are perfectly captured in this most "tight squeeze" of cubbyholes - in terms of time, place and visibility. Picking up on Amber's point, I have just returned from London and was mentalising the showering process whilst in transit on the tubes and railways there: having arrived from the Dorset coast with fresh sea-breezes in my hair and cheeks, I was struck by how quickly I felt "grimed and sapped" once caught up in the slick of city life with its end-of-day weariness and sickly light. Not only water, but light and air perform this most beautiful of ablutions so necessary to all aspects of our health, well-being - and, ultimately, our survival. No wonder baptism is such a powerful act of spiritual access and rite of passage. A nice read-and-relax for a sleepy Sunday morning, Kartero... Have a good one! waterKloset Kate xx
Indeed, modernity has little to offer, other than fights, riots and a new breed of greed.
Such poison needs to be eradicated if we want to exist.
Interesting write even to one who prefers baths to showers...I like the feeling of being wrapped up in a cocoon of warmth and comfort but I can also see where you are coming from with this write.
Jude,
I read your poem this morning right before I took my shower. I could visualize everything that you wrote, it is amazing how cleansing water can be for the body and soul and mind. I was right there with you my dear friend, sweating out those poisons of modern life and exposed as one can be...One thing though, I felt refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to face life, and burn out any of those poisons in my way today. I then proceeded to visit a friend that lives in the country and had the opportunity to see her horse Jack, and I knew exactly what you were trying to say in this poem...You are the master poet indeed.
I am wishing you all the peace, light and love the Universe has for you,
Amber
Awesome imagery! and I identify with the cleansing of passing feelings and thoughts, all that needs to be washed away for the new to live.
A nice hot shower cleanses both the body and the soul. It opens the pores and the chakra,clearing the body and the mind of clouds as it cleanses and rehydrates life itself and refreshes the spirit. It is one of my favorite times of my day and I always take a moment to express my gratitude as I step from the shower and grab for my towel. I do get the metaphor, here, but the reality check and the metaphor are pretty much the same for me.
Take care,
Sherry
