                 water drops
           from a broken ceiling
              exploding drops
                 upon a faded tile floor

          i stare into a puddle
                    probing listless ripples
       and distorted reflections

            (crumbled skyscrapers, tenements,
                  bridges, trains, and cars
     decomposing by time enzymes)

                the sun’s rays
                         mirthlessly expose
      this desolate scene,
      this cold, discarded bedlam

            as alien
            as a lost dream,
            as lonely
            as an empty womb,
            as dusty
            as a galaxy of stars

here, only shallow whispers
    rattle about broken doors

            only unsightly memories
 roam stairwells
       weaving through massive cobwebs

         here, billions shared a breath
               called existence

   where dreams
                      came to an abrupt end

    where shattered bones
                 decorate fallen bricks
    wedged between moldy shadows

             decayed carcasses
     dangle from lampposts, terraces
                        and telephone poles

         secured by ropes
braided by prejudice, hatred, and greed

as alien
as a lost dream,
as lonely
as an empty womb,
as dusty
as a galaxy of stars

such desolation of mind, body and spirit is conjured by this fulcrum stanza and your final lines suggestive of lynching has already long been an image of social fact not science fiction. It seems mankind has learned nothing through its long years of painful global history and so-called intellectual advancement, and these kind of fears are once again running ragged through our streets. Another timely and uncomfortable write which, however long I stare at in hope, I don't think is going to convert into the story of that amazing storefront in Berlin - but how I wish it would! :)) xx Oh.. and love "time's enzymes" - so accurate but also so visual and "knawing". Chilling, Kartero... very... xx

I would like to say that this is a timely Halloween offering, but to be honest, it seems like a walk down an old alley right in the heart of busy city. A forgotten place where the sun no longer casts its rays and even the vermin have left for better digs. There are dead streets and towns everywhere, now, where not so long ago I can recall children playing stickball in the street and the days laundry hanging out to dry. It seems that we, rather collectively, suffer from a lack of pride and live in a world where items and people are disposable. Very meaty post, Jude...sort of had my mind fabricating characters and unfolding scenes for a short story, movie or play.
Take care,
Sherry

Wow, if this was a dreamscape, man I would call it a nightmare. Foreshadowing of what is to come? Can we really believe that we are headed for Nirvana? or what you describe? It is a deeply thought out poem to make your readers stand up and smell the roses. So much to comment about in this intriguing poem, that my mind is boggled somewhat.

I especially can feel the desolation and eeriness within the last three stanzas..but your very last line brings it right to the core! Prejudice, hatred and greed (all negative energies) is what will be the demise of society for sure. Can we turn it all around, the poet thinks not, or does he?

Happy Halloween Jude :)

Ummm quite another Jude ism...

Write on!

Peace, light and love,

Amber

A very deep sometimes chilly poem.I favour this part of it:

' i stare into a puddle
probing listless ripples
and distorted reflections '....life is like that at times for us all.
Best wishes always to you and yours

OMW, this is not the future, it is the here and now.
As ever, succinctly written.
The final line could easily be mankind's eulogy.

We hung the best and forgot the rest. An apt description of the dark side of human nature that may lead to our downfall. For what is a city without its people except a ghost town. Bravo!

As usual you walk us through the places you envision with slow intense sight that explores all the what ifs of the moment. Well done as always Jude.

Jude,

Your poem paints a very dim future, but sometimes realistic, of and for the world we live in. My hope is that someone will be elected into office that will have a clear head, love in his/her heart to clean up America again and make this great country whole again. Will it happen? Probably not, but one can hope!!

Jude,
this is bleak and serious fortune telling;
for me, the good news is many 'lesser' creatures
will probably outlast us.

Too deep for some,
More powerful than one,

Is this to be our future? I drive past so many empty buildings and shops now. How far will they push our economy just to make Pres. Obama a one term president? Your poem brought this to mind. Deep and profound. Love it. Liz
