~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the bridge began to rust years ago
 from the underpass
orange-brown scabs of oxidized steel
         riddles its flagging structure
       while the constant roar of traffic
  permeates its air
          the flux of voices
                 from the promenade
  leisurely stroll
above the river’s bellowing rush
    sickened with salty moisture,
its once pristine silver skin
              is a tarnished membrane of iron girders
    unpainted cables and potholes
     at night I stand under its spotted lights
my bones and muscles still holding me up
                watching stars flicker
         through arches
                  across heaven's crossing
jude, an analogy to keep us aware that we too age and fall into physical disrepair - our paint and restrengthening come in many ways - we must embrace them all to carry the constant load upon our aging structures - I wish you love and peace my dear friend - Jon Michael
I'm definitely with Vickie here... pass me that spray can! ;)) Just as it's your vision that holds you up and sustains you as well as your wiring and cables, the bridge is manifesting through its wear and tear the life and soul it's already witnessed and absorbed, spanning physical and metaphysical places and never standing still although seemingly belonging to one time and place - like the heavens. Bridges have a special spiritual quality that we're all aware of, both at a distance and close-up and, most especially, while crossing them. Love this meditation, Amigo. xx
I love the rustic vision here Jude, truly I do over all that new modern sheen...I feel like creating beautiful poetic graffiti on the bridge :)
Structures neglected deteriorate. So too the human condition. Be sure to eat your wheaties, drink your milk and eat your carrots. Gazing requires beta carotene and stars. Patrick
I saw a bridge similar to this in NY. Someone had been arrested for crossing it. Man, if that didn't just make me want to do the same. I so love heights if risk is involved. And there was a cafe called Andy's nearby. :)
The paradox of the mortal and immortal along with the ugliness that man builds compared to the universa, heavenly beauty that we will never emulate.
the rust of time's coursing on planet earth contrasts starkly with
Many of our bridges have seen better days, but the night does often give them a most captivating aura.
I loved this piece. I too have stood and gazed at a bridge near to my home and had similar thoughts. At night I find such places take on an eerie atmosphere...and such thoughts fly free to link and combine with random thoughts of the cosmos...Your last verse is idyllic...
there's much affection in these lines, Jude,
understanding of wear and passing of all things;
i love "...sickened with salty moisture"
and it's good to know your "bones (are) still holding up"
You words turn this bridge into an animated piece of art instead of an aging and decaying structure. The flow of this piece was excellent and when I got to the end, I was sorry that it was completed;sorry that I had not witnessed each day of its existence. I must admit, though, that the first two times that I read it my mind changed the last line to "bridging heaven's crossing" for some reason, almost as if I had read it before, written that way. This is an A+ Jude.
Take care,
Sherry
This was beautifully and interestingly worded, Jude. You gave the old bridge (I have seen that bridge as I looked at others in the sane shape) a very personal touch with your flowing words and the mere fact that you were standing beneath it. Special piece of work in my opinion.
We all are rusting away. It's the bridges that we constantly have to rebuild to the universe that keep us going long after our bones are dust.
Hey Jude,
This is stunning poetry in motion. I love the ending.
I can just picture you standing beneath this huge structure, seeing the stars "across heaven's crossing." Nicely done, as always I sigh as I read your poetry.....
Much peace, light, and love,
Amber
