~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m looking out my window
thinking how cool it would be to be
that young man
skating down
that long avenue
or rather, ominous hill
dressed in a lengthy black leather jacket
with a white headscarf
and purple earmuffs around his skull
spinning down and about
with no care in the world
invincible
a conqueror of many world’s ahead
and maybe so justifiably so
but wow! phew! now glad I’m to be up here!
now that he’s lying down on tar street
behind a metallic black Caddy
skates in the air
you know, sometimes age has its benefits
at least you make sure to look around
and maybe see something more than survival
for you made it past the horror and total futility of it all
especially when it’s simpler
just to watch and wait for the commotion to begin
and whatever happens does
Perhaps it was his choice of colours on this unfortunate occasion? Running the gauntlet takes split second timing which can never be fooled with - especially in the eternal scheme of things. You really cracked this with the change of title to echo that conclusive last line (your trademark). But, c'mon Kartero! Even old fatalists like you need to get a little proactive and not just drift like flotsam on the tide!! :) xx
In California it is legal for motorcyclists to lane split (ride between lanes) on the jam packed freeways. Suicidal.
And whatever happens does, every single day. Traffic radio fodder.
Well done, Jude...exposes our own images of your words and the invincibility of this young man..."skates in the air"...OUCH!
Hey Jude,
You are on a roll! no pun intended lol!
I'd rather be old and wise than young and foolish. well, sometimes it's fun to be a little foolish!
Great Poem, you brought us on a journey.
Peace, light and love,
Amber
Ah ... days of our youth when we were fearless and took risks ... I can't count how many times I took a spill on the pavement! Great write!
It was a thrill while it lasted. YouTube makes it possible for kids today to try impossible stunts that only lead to serious injury. If you have taken the video and put it on YouTube, you would get more hits than your poetry.
It was probably those purple ear muffs that did him in! :)
This was a rich, twist of a read, Jude. Didn't know where this poem was taking me, so I had not one assumption; even so, the observation changed its flavor in the miiddle of the bite and that was greatly effective. Some shock factor, some philosophy, two hurculean lines: "a conqueror of many world's ahead/and maybe so justifyably so," AND "and maybe see something more than survival/for you made it past the horror and total futility of it all." This "skating down the avenue" sure went further for me than 'the avenue.' Very good ~~ Diana
I love to go to the park and watch the kids on their skateboards on the half pipes sometimes. I see similar incidents such as you have written of. Yes, I just sit and watch for sure!
Love ya!
And make sure to look both ways before you cross the street or someone will run you down!
Hey don't dish the flow dude. :o)
Never let pain and suffering stop you from taking the risk of the thrill. I bet you'd be a dangerous person on roller blades.
You express one of my favourite pastimes, People-Watching. There's a world of entertainment and wisdom in it, that is not easily found elsewhere.
A great write!
The only thing keeping us from living our dreams is fear. As we get older, we seem to have more fear, though we choose to call it wisdom. At a time when we have lived a full life and seen so much, we should laugh at risk and reach for everything we have ever wanted. Truly, we have little to lose and much to gain. Instead we become the voyeur and live our life watching others pursue their dreams.
Yup, the young ones are daring and fearless...until something goes wrong then they would not how silly they have been.
...looking out your window...mind...you may be somewhat
daunted by the sheer effort and "safety issues" necessary
to achieve your goals that enhance...the freedom...but once
you start moving down the long avenue...it may prove easier
than you anticipate...and safe and cool...to be outside
the autopilot of age...
Enjoyed your great poem! a lot.
