You came home unexpectedly, the house a total wreck
The irritation in your voice you did not keep in check
I bristle as you start mouthing off, I do not need your sarcasm
Angry now I start to shout, a good old-fashioned tantrum
Something shorted in the laundry room but the flood put out the fire
The smoke alarm keeps going off, it’s totally gone haywire
The dog messed on the carpet, our boy stayed out all night
Tommy needs another specialist and moneys always tight
I am not Suzy Homemaker and never claimed to be
Shut up and move the laundry and have a drink with me
Your vision of a joyous surprise dissipated when you walked in
Reality shattered your fantasy, your dream took a tailspin
You’re tired and I’ve still got lots of work so I kiss you goodnight
Get out of here and get your rest, I do not want to fight
It’s after midnight when I finally quit and crawl quietly into bed
You’ve been snoring for a while now and I gently kiss your head
Still sleeping you reach for me and pull me safe and close
There in your arms I finally find rest and quickly begin to doze
Exhaustion gives way to dreamless sleep, a moment of reprieve
No tossing or turning or nightmares, just restful bliss achieved
In the early dawn I become aware as you brush the hair from my face
A wonderful moment in limbo before we tackle the daily rat-race
I reach for you, your warmth inviting, I kiss you hard and deep
Our bodies know the other so well, this isn’t a difficult leap
With the sun comes an urgency, fear of a moment lost
Holding you close I feel your weight, seizing rapture at any cost
Our bodies responding to each other, we easily find release
And just as important as we lay together, our hearts and minds at peace
Someone’s in the bathroom, another yells ‘The bread’s moldy, Mom’
Another day begins and to reality we succumb
Oh Raelynn we raised five children and I know of these days all too well. Thank you for sharing your words, Today our children are all grown up and moved away and I often sit and cry of the days gone by.
