A wispy twilight feature,
Barely could I see,
This tiny sweetest creature,
Beneath the darkness of a tree,
On a bench it sat, nearly fast asleep,
Its little face, tilted to one side,
Half moon lids, over eyes so deep,
Grey its fur on top, the little tummy white,
A wee timid creature, and smaller still,
Half the size of my thumb,
Barely the corner of my palm did fill,
A sweetest little crumb,
Upon a wish where hearts do meet,
A piece of butter did I steal,
Knowing of the others need,
Its hunger would I heal,
The butter melted as did my heart,
It took my offer with much haste,
Licked every bit of oily part,
Not a drop of it did waste,
Its tiny tongue it rasped across,
A calloused hand that aged of time,
Save Mother Nature one more loss,
Such treasures fill that soul of mine,
Though bittersweet a tear it fell,
As happiness is wrapped with pain,
Another day it would live to tell,
