The Unknown Gate

I pass this gate everyday
And wonder what lurks behind,
Mysteries and secrets I imagine
To know the answer I am resigned.

The latch is shackled the gate is high
A stone fortress for reasons unknown,
Gates are made to keep one in or out,
or to simply be secluded and alone.

I keep passing by this unknown gate
It is never opened or unlocked,
I often wondered who would answer
if I simply stopped and knocked.

The stone is cracked, grey and cold,
Is the gate ever opened or closed?
The paint chipped door and wild ivy
look unsightly as neglect is exposed.

Who or what will reveal the truth
the old story or future fate,
Who or what holds the secret key
to what lies behind the unknown gate?

Dear Shelley, I came across this gate and wondered who is behind it. I finally peaked through the key hole and guess what I saw? A litle doll playing with a small bird. I wondered what language they were talking, as I myself talk every day with my lovely and free flying birds. Have you noticed? Why did you stop writing, you have a great talent, use it. My friends will admire you. You know already a few of them. Love Emile

The Unknown Gate stands as evidence that humankind is as curious as the cat but more cerebral. The cat would swipe a paw and end the mystery. We tend to consider the mystery from 47 angles first, and then share our curiosity with others. We may never open the door for what we gain in revelation we lose in mystery.

Aren't we a crazy bunch?

Loved your poem.

Shelley,

Sometimes the mysterious is better left that way. Good one.

"And wander what lurks behind"

I think you meant to write "wonder" in this line but I could be wrong.
I always appreciate it when others point out my "typos."

Notwithstanding, I love your poem. It "speaks" to me because I believe it is of a universal and timeless theme of humans on this planet.

Thank you for sharing this. Welcome to AD. Love and peace to you,

Regis
