Lonely is the Night

I awoke at midnight
I walked along the forest edge
The moon was shining bright

I held my lariat like magic
A herd of wild horses
came over the rise
ran through a big meadow
I stood in the shadows
along the river bank

They came up to drink
I noticed a black beauty,
A high spirited stud
I roped him then
and snubbed him to a tree

He was struggling to escape
I spoke to him easy, softly
whispering “just a little ride beauty”
I rubbed him down gently
I scratched his ears and head

I jumped aboard
He begin to kick and stomp
I rubbed his neck and whispered
I’ll set you free my friend
I loosened the rope, he kicked and bucked

I pulled it off the tree
and he took off with me hanging on
I grabbed his mane and stroked his head
He finally settled a bit

When our ride was over
I said “no man can own you,
You are free to roam”
I took the rope off of his neck
He stood still for a moment

I said so long my friend
I’ll come back some lonely midnight
when the shining one is bright

He walked up the meadow
high stepping
He bobbed his head and snorted,
when he got to the top of the rise
He whinnied, calling his companions

The horse herd came out
from hiding in the shadows
of the forest glen
They galloped off and he reared
seeming to smile, he looked back at me

I walked the path I had followed
and wondered if this were a dream
I knew he’d be back again

Lonely is the night

Bring on the Lonely Nights in that case!! :)) You're speaking my language with that mysterious and rippling Black Beauty... who could be lonely with him around... or, at least, in my book, he would be worth becoming lonely for! Exhilaratin, Dale, and made me breathless with anticipation... and, ere, wot's a lariat?? A blanket??!!! :)) A smokin write - even without that camp fire... LOL Kate xx

Good good VERY good prose poem! Didn't really need to be written in stanzas at all! And it would make a great painting if you know a starving artist. . .

Lonely and wild is the night and you know that we may capture it
for only a moment, and then-only in setting it free-we may possess it's true beauty. Glorious write! You have my Sag hooves pawing at
the earth and wanting to run under the light of that shining moon.
The images are spectaculer. So very fine! Love, Lin
