old cowboy
north of laredo
surrounded by prickly pears
cacti among the mesquite
desert sand
pastures of brown
cross-bred cattle roam
his west texas ranch

starting his day again
riding his sorrel
under the hot
desert sun
rolling pastures
a long distance
where outside the city

a hermit, a recluse
old cowboy
bonds with his brood
horses, cattle and dogs
running freely reign
scorching desert plains
red sun sets
leaving the night heat
for a solitary rattlesnake dance
