Mama always said," If you aint a good little girl, I'll put you in the Cracker Farm!"

Her Mama's threat had come to pass,
She now lived in the insane asylum at last.
Thrown amid the droolin mass,
This was her fate, the die had been cast.
Wild-eyed strangers, screamed and moaned,
This living Hell was now her home.
Vacant eyes watched and stared,
Afraid to move, she huddled in a chair.
An old hag, screamed a lullaby,
To a doll she shook, cause she thought it cried.
A slack-jawed man, with gnarled fingers, gave her a poke,
He laughed hysterically, her scream was his joke.
Then more inmates gathered around,
They pulled and tugged at her hair and gown.
She screamed and screamed, but no one came,
No one bothered, for she was judged insane.
She screamed until she lost her voice,
She whimpered and trembled, knowing she had no choice.
She was entombed with the living dead,
With babbling entities, who were demented and out of their head.
She prayed daily for death and sweet release,
Day or night, she got no peace.
She now fits in, see her vacant stare?
As she rocks and smiles, a wild thing in a chair.

The sad truth is that all too often in years gone by that mental health facilities were used for just such a purpose, a parent to get rid of a troubled child, a husband to get rid of a wife and even children to get rid of senior parents...sad but true fact of life.

Such a sad write. It's hard to get someone into long term psychiatric treatment now days. It's mostly just drug them up and send them out. these people are some of our homeless. There is little in the community to assist them. Just out the door. I divorced my ex because he wanted to lock me up forever. I rather be bipolar and alone than be bipolar and with him. He was crazier than I was. Excellent write. You really captured the emptiness and have aptly named this poem Entombed. Liz

This was well written out SC
Such a sick! upsetting feeling and sad known knowledge! I know this too well, had to visit a friend at one, kinda' ( no - it did, these PEOPLE walked around like zombies and their heads down, and this was a partial program, some stayed over.
It shook me up as I walked through the courtyard! I could feel their PAIN, CONFUSION and EMPTINESS they felt, I sat and spoke with 2 women and did my BEST to boost their spirits, but knowing- they might not even remember our talk - They were called back in by some orderly and I left too, telling them to be STRONG! and remember to Stay Strong and don't let others walk all over you! YOU deserve better, one women Suzzie, gave me a hug and a smile, and I started to walk away with tears... I was sad all day from that visit - but it is their sad life! Enough said - Your poem brought much to the surface! Means you stirred me up Women!
Entombed is a great name for solitary in minds/etc.
WRITE ON!

I was in the mental State Hosp from 1984 to 1990. Believe me it was no picnic either. I did not want out til deciding to leave and marry Tom and take him with me. He was sczophrenic and a challenge to live with but we made it til his death. It was not like in the old days, but had murderers, druggies, and insane there too. I was just bi polar and put there by my 1st husband who was mean and divorced me because I had a problem. He unnecessarily did not have to do this, but he did. I forgave him though he never forgave me for running up the high costs of bills for treatment. Many a time while in state hosp I was put in the quiet room for screaming and losing control. It was only for the first few years til I was put on the right meds. It was surely a struggle and no fun. Remember those days forever. So glad Tom and I got out and made a better life. Although Tom killed himself by excessive smoking he could not help it, he was addicted to it so much. No lectures helped him. Wish I could of been more help to him. My past is nothing to dwell over though, it was meant to be and was.
