A Viper's Embrace

When Mother passed away, Ben had just appeared at her wake,
He was so kind and comforting, saying I should be brave for her sake.
He said that he was the son of my mother's long, lost friend,
He became my safe haven and I fell in love with mysterious Ben.
He was tall, dark and handsome, dressing like a man of means,
My lawyer was suspicious, fearing Ben was not what he seemed.
I was quite wealthy, my parents had seen to that,
Soon Ben introduced me to Madame Serene, a gyspy with eyes like a cat.
She smelled of jasmine and her presence filled a room,
Serene could tell the future and see into the misty gloom.
Her strange, mystical eyes could put me into a trance,
She could ease my troubled mind with just one glance.
Her daily visits and special tea, gave me peace and rest,
Her crystal ball assured me that Ben was my soul mate, my happiness.
Ben was an ardent lover and my heart welcomed him in,
Serene was our constant companion, a trusted friend.
I married Ben, against my lawyer's wish,
He suddenly vanished and his body was found dwelling among the fish.
Ben hired another lawyer to settle my estate,
Everything was left to Ben,in case death should become my fate.
I became ill and Serene came to care for me,
She held my hand and gave me her soothing tea.
My health rapidly declined and I was sent to a hospice for care,
A doctor suspected poison, treated me and I recovered while I was there.
The law was notified, they sent Ben a message, that I'd died in my sleep,
Now my home and money was Ben's to keep.
It was midnight when I entered my house accompanied by the law,
Ben and Serene, in my bed was what we all saw.
Ben hadn't known my mother, it had been a ploy,
He'd scan the obituaries to find his prey, their wealth he'd soon enjoy.
Serene was his lover, she supplied poisoned tea,
She would befriend then poison innocent victims like me.
I survived the viper's embrace and lived to tell this tale,
While Ben and Serene now rot away in jail.

O' SC, this is so sad when money or materical things are put before abiding love. Well written and much wisdom, hope many read this and keep their eyes open. Love, Bonnie

What a wonderful story teller you are, Sweet Comfort...and in
enviable rhyme. I love this line: She smelled of jasmine and her presence filled a room. -gene

As LaBelle said such things happen. I have seen more women as the gold diggers to elderly gents though, but I'm sure it's about equal.
Great story line, Sissy.

What a tale! Is it true tale? I had suspected Ben in the very beginning. It's great that he was caught red handed.

Next time, even though lawyers are considered snakes, "she" might listen to him as a man knows a man or at the very least can tell from the scent, that they are good or bad to a degree...A very good story that i enjoyed...Ed

PS: As soon as you mentioned Ben, I knew he was trouble...;-)
